Another LCR phono (aka BTJ-9000S)

Thing is Pete pretty much built it for the cost of parts - even if I dumbed-down parts quality, you still need the really spendy bits to be excellent - i.e. the transformers.

Anyway, the sound is fabulous, but that jewel-like build quality gives me the horn too…

Nice to have something to aspire to mind :+1:

Ja, it looks magnificent and makes Jimbo’s already staggering system just mentally good. Cunts.

When do we get to see @coco Audio Ltd. I wonder ?

Still, I bet @coco built it for nothing, he’s still a way off making minimum wage. Stunningly talented yet far to nice to make it profitable.

This is just wrong, in so many ways. The Nagra is excellent, as is your system, so ergo, the Nagra sounds excellent.
You may not like it as much as your ££££££££ vinyl system, but it is not, and never will be, unlistenable.
Are you saying @wayward phono stage is unlistenable?
Good systems sound good, with good music playing through them; streaming, CD, vinyl, or RIPs.
Glad you are happy!

You need to hear Jim’s system with the new Phono and then you would understand why the Nagra is surplus to requirements. :grinning:

I have suggested it on occasion but Pete did not seem keen. The thing is what would the price be commercialy? Could get it built in China or utilize the AA unemployed in a well ventilated sweatshop. :sunglasses:

I have heard Dave’s in Jim’s system, and yes it does sound epic, but far from making the Nagra redundant.

You could commercialise this kind of thing, as there are people out there willing to pay serious money, but at the high end you need to cover marketing as well as a straight development and build cost. Once you have dealerscum mark-up as well it would have to retail for £50k+

Sell direct.

Yep, this is probably the biggest obstacle. Mate’s rates just won’t cut it in the real world.

Very much this !

It’s finding the punters though innit. They are out there but getting to them is difficult. A lot of people with real money are more convinced by brand too.

CDs are ok for trying to scare blackbirds off an allotment but really they are pretty shit at that too.

So then sell it for £25k, and rely on reviews in 6 Loons and the like, hardly sell any and not be able to scale up, so each one is made by you? Sounds like hard work.

Easier to plug into an established high end manufacturer, establish a manufacturing process and maintain quality control, and charge a £10k per item royalty. Let them sell it for £192k :joy:

Bottom line is that commercialising this would require Pete abandoning his well paid and reliable day job - trying to make money from hifi is only for the desperate (e.g. me), the insane (e.g. me), the crooked (you can make your own mind up about that one) and the very well-established and highly competent (remarkably few).

I would never, ever walk away from a good steady job that kept a roof over my head to do anything with hifi, no matter how high-end - far too fickle a market, and far too many scammers, tyre-kickers and tear-jerking charity cases…

You missed the “kept man” option
