Wow, memories, when was the last time I listened to Dimmu Borgir ?
How the fuck should I know?
Backlash is a great album. Reckon youâll like it.
@spacehopper @Waxy @flapland @shrink @jazznuts, if you have any input, that would be appreciated please.
Ta.
I know nothing, except what I like. My jazz theory is negligible. Like most of my collection, the jazz section is the result of a random walk and not intelligence-led.
Hope that helps
It might, if it wasnât exactly what I did and failed, miserably
I mean itâs mostly just more âhard bopâ and sounds similar to many other contemporaries of the time.
Iâd suggest trying:
Sonny Rollins (Alfie soundtrack and saxophone colossus come to mind)
Some of it calls out albums like cannonball adderleys âspontaneous combustionâ
You could also check out more art farmer pieces such as
Plus I suspect you might enjoy something like Oscar Peterson doing âa portrait of Frank Sinatraâ
Lastly, you could check out Vince Guaraldi
Try some of those and if anything floats your boat I can steer you to more of the same.
appreciated.
Saw Lucinda Williams in the week.
I had forgotten how good her band were
This is a mainly instrumental album they put out in their own right.
LW guests on So Much Trouble In The World
Sorry Mike Iâm knackered after getting in late from work tonight but will have a think and let you know tomorrow
Jimmy Smith - The Cat, and Lou Donaldson - Mr Shing-A-Ling might be worth checking out?
Do you like smoooooth or with a bit of âedgeâ ?
I have some more modern funky/fusion/jazz-rock which may suit if itâs the latter.
My knowledge of Hard Bop is limited.
Although I buy and play a lot of âJazzâ I am really no expert. Apart from my Miles Davis records most of my expansion came off the back of the De Agostini Jazz at 33 1/3 series that started in 2016. Overall a well curated set, and mostly decent pressing/mastering. Certainly better than the DOL and similar releases.
These can be picked up fairly cheaply from Discogs, as can some of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl releases on Amazon.

That was expanded mostly by posts on this thread or expanding on stuff I enjoyed. By other path was off the Sault, Shabaka Hutchings and other new British Jazz. Now I have avoided going down that rabbit hole too deep as you can see there are many branches.
Better PDF link to above and its author on this page. Also on that page is a link to a dynamic version someone else created. Could you imagine what a 1950-70s US Jazz version would look like, suspect it would be like looking into the Milky Way.
