Architecture is one area of the arts that is treated so unpredictability compared to many others. I am sure all of you have been to a gallery, classic car show, furniture exhibition/store and said ‘ugh, that’s ugly/not to my taste’ etc. But the fact is those objects are there to be appreciated, or in some cases not, as a point in history or represent a period in our creative thinking. History shouldn’t be edited based on one particular view point (we all know where that leads), it should be preserved for future generations to discover their own preferences and learn from it. I dislike post-modern art and architecture, Neo-classicism, amongst others but don’t wish for a bland state where only things that please my eye exist.
St. Aldhelm’s Chapel, Dorset. The age and original use of this building aren’t really known but it’s thought it may have been a fisherman’s chapel dating back to the thirteenth century. It has graffiti that’s hundreds of years old carved in to the stone within. It’s a very peaceful place to visit.
