Much of the brutalist Tallinn stuff came from it being the venue for sailing events in the 1980 Olympics.
My favourite building there was the TV tower (also put up to transmit Olympic events) which I was fortunate enough to see before it was refurbished and Westernised in 2007-12.
Proper old school Soviet interiors and artwork originally.
In the process of unfucking my parents’ financial wankery, I was rather surprised to find that for the maisonette that they built with a friend, they have sold the freehold to the owners for a token amount.
This denying me the smug self satisfied feeling of doing exactly that.
I have a walking guide to Thamesmead by Owen Hatherley. I guess I ought to get my skates on if they’re about to start chewing the place up.
I’d recommend basically anything that Hatherley has written, although if your politics aren’t somewhere to the left of Marx you may feel your blood pressure rising
First a Nazi bunker, then soviet POW jail, then techno club of some fame and finally a modern art museum. Not many buildings of this age left in this part of Berlin, its reinforced concrete structure helped!
