Circe by John Collier 1885.

Went to this last Saturday.
Probably going to this next Saturday.
This guy is forever popping up on my feed - mostly as his reels are decent and I gawp at them - Originals aren’t too steep
I want one of those systems without fiddly details like interconnects or tonearms. They look cool.
I have just the thing Sir. Come to my warm, welcoming emporium and bask in fine company - we don’t need to be vulgar and discuss payment your card details will simply suffice.
Looking forward to going to this next week. She was something of an icon in Plymouth and the art is very astute & funny.
You can also still go into pubs like the Dolphin and still see the same types of character even now.
Automotive art? Don’t béton it:
My dad’s favourite, he’s got a signed silkscreen mum bought him for his 60th and a few prints.
They actually had a few paintings by the artists that inspired her alongside her work. A loaned Rubens, Bruegel (the younger) and this one by Edward Burra.
But also to be observing life in & around the margins of society, particularly in LGBT clubs & pubs back in the 70’s when it was still generally hidden was pretty progressive. Also seeing up close the skill by which she’d reproduce skin tone with one technique, vegetation with another, fabric/clothing with another made me realise she was far more capable than I’d thought. It’s a very uplifting show too, a lot of fun.
She’d probably resent the term, and no question her fans would, but there’s more honesty in one good cartoon than a thousand artworks by most artists, and to me she’s one of Britain’s finest cartoonists - she celebrated real people to their very souls, and did so with genuine joy and affection. Pretty unique.
The Lee Miller exhibition at the Tate was very nice.
