Brexit is just a political football really.
Corbyn just wanted May to do his dirty work for him (i.e force no deal off the table and bring a second referendum much closer without him having to make an actual firm policy decision and upset many of his MP’s and labour voters). Clever but hardly principled stuff!!
May equally isn’t daft enough to serve it on a plate to him.
Here is a decent quote from this morning’s round of interviews:

Now you might expect this from the opposition or from some right-on Academic who is in favour of remain, however the quote is from Richard Harrington, the business minister. This evidence of cabinet solidarity makes reassuring reading less than three months from Brexit.

She’s just like Corbyn in this respect - he has positions he wants, but he can’t be seen to be wanting them. He needs to be seen to be forced into them, for fear of alienating certain groups on his party/electorate.
Frankly this whole thing of both party leaders wanting to be seen to be pushed into the place that they actually want to be strikes me as unpleasantly machiavellian (definition: “characterized by a duplicitous interpersonal style, a cynical disregard for morality, a lack of empathy, and a focus on self-interest and personal gain” - how right is that?)
I went on a course years ago about persuasion. The course leader said that there were two positive ways to win people over - either you can be open with people and be an honest broker for the right deal, or you can state your preference and try to persuade people to your position. One guy then piped up that what he did was to have an end point in mind, but he would not state this; he would have an open discussion that he would try to manoeuvre towards his desired end. The course leader said that he was a massive cunt (she was right as well).

May announces she will talk to other party leaders, May talks to the minor ones who all say they were lectured to rather than discussed and then abandons the idea as she may get a bigger lash back from bulging eye mad tory MPs.
