Brexit episode 2 - the attack of the gammon

That’s ok because I’m sure the £350 million a week the NHS gets will cover the subsequent increase in illness from unsafe water…

Oh wait; that figure was bullshit wasn’t it!

You mean after all that talk of impending catastrophe, it turned out to be a mere disaster?

How disappointing.

Or something.

Another Brexit bonus

Setting-aside any schadenfreude concerning the many ex-pats who voted Leave, this seems a pretty foot-shooty thing for Spain to do (should legislation be passed…), since a majority of the affected properties will be in and around resort areas where there is no great demand by locals.

By way of contrast, like Italy, they also have this going on:

Suspect it’s also to try and appease much of this

Relatedly, I read this recently, which was fascinating:

If the investment in rentals is worth it i can see foreign money being funneled in via companies in other EU States.

They are in a pickle in Spain as they can’t treat EU citizens any differently to their own when it comes to property ownership.

They could limit second homes using local taxes or byelaws but that would then affect Spanish owners of second homes, likely not a popular move.

Hotspots such as Barcelona and certain holiday destinations, especially the islands, have a real issue. Even the all inclusive developments see the profits leaving Spain. A lot of local resentment has built up.

It a much more restrained British way we have similar in Cornwall and pretty much all the national parks as well as the West Coast of Scotland.

In Wales they just start fires!

Wales now has legislation for local government to tax second homes and holiday lets. Moving away from *Wicker Man * reruns.
