Car Detailing Faff

This feels like the begining of a slippery slope.

After a thorough wash and decontamination I put two coats of Finish Kare paste wax on the Porker a couple of weeks ago. I did the inside thoroughly too.

I would just like to say that is not my front door . Mine is the house to the right.

Is that a scratch on the rear right wheelarch? :scream:

Not on the drivers side. Its dirt undervthe grit guard. The film grit guard needs replacing. I have a replacement which I need to fit. A job for the spring tbh.

There is a scratch on the other side which some tosser did in a supermarket car park I think. It might polish out, which again is a job for the spring.

I’m having the bonnet / front end sprayed in the spring. Plus I’ll get a couple of stone chips sorted before it’s polished and I put a ceramic coating on it. I might get the wheels refurbed too. There are a couple of dings on the rims.New no plates to be purchased too. A little refresh in the spring.

Taking detailing of the underside and engine bay to a new level!

Being a bit low on faff at the moment decided to dip toe in the water with some detailing.
Will experiment on the BMW workhorse estate 1st, then a cautious go on the 911.
After many hours of Youtube tutorials and a recommendation in this thread, settled on a DAS-6 Pro (900W) DA machine & various Menzerma pads & magical potions.
Plus reassuringly expensive masking tape and poncey panel wipe.

That’s exactly what I bought, although I only bought two of those polishes. It’s extremely easy to use.

BMW clear coat is rock hard. Take your time and be prepared for 2 or 3 passes with the heavy cut if you’re looking to remove swirles and light scratches.

Kit arrived today

So had a go on the BM.
As gthang said the paint is rock hard.
Big improvement but have ordered some heavier compound to get deep marks out.

Just go careful, there is a limit. You can shift swirl marks but proper scratches, especially deepish ones will never be removed, all you’ll achive is reducing the clear coat around the area you’re trying to improve. Really you need a depth guage to make sure you’re not removing too much.

There’s always wet sanding, someone here needs to be first…

Good point, but will swerve the wet sanding :worried:

For the win.

Chrome with stripes, how very tasteful :joy:

Not quite as hideously grotesque as the new un

Feeling a bit more confident, set about the 911.
The paint condition was much better than the BMW so in a couple of hours had done the back end & the bonnet.
Pretty hard work but its not rocket science to get a passable finish.
Jeez I’ll be into Ceramic coating next…

Go on Jim, you know you want to!

Anyone recommend a detailer around Notts/Grantham? I think I’d like to get one of those new car prep packages with a ceramic coating to make future cleaning as low effort as possible.

My brother’s mate who is a huge national car dealer sells loads of the coatings. It’s how he gets his profit (add ons).
He says it’s a money spinner and they don’t really last… He always tells us not to bother when we get cars from him.
Back to the Q I can’t help with any recs.

From what I’ve read it largely depends on who is applying them along with the prep and care taken.
