I’m amused by the ‘look what capitalism can achieve’ takes on this when a communist program first put men into space some 60 years ago and which in turn prompted the vast, state run enterprise that was NASA and its Apollo/Skylab/Space Shuttle adventures.

It used to be said that the one large manufacturing sector where, until the arrival of Airbus, the US had a near global monopoly, was aviation. It was also the sector into which, atypically, the US government had poured a vast amount of money over decades (Boeing, Lockheed, McDonnell-Douglas, Northrop-Grumman, etc, etc). So much for ‘capitalism works, state support doesn’t’.
