Dicking about with crap old cars

Just as a note, you shouldn’t really use grease or anti-seize on wheel nuts - the torque settings are normally for dry threads. It will cause you to over-tighten it due to the reduced friction. Probably not much of an issue, but something to be aware of.

I’d have just got a 1/2” chrome socket and treated it as disposable. :rofl:

I did the brakes on my Golf last week and the impact (rated 300NM) couldn’t get the wheel nuts off so had to use a breaker bar. Don’t think they were overtightend, just corrosion and cruft.

No, I gave up after rounding the bolt off and went and bought beer.

We’ll probably have to do that tomorrow. The fuel tank is far enough away, but the wheel arch liner is all plastic, so I’ve soaked the retaining screws and will take that out if we need to. I’m hoping Gaz has one of those induction heaters cos I don’t think an extractor will be up to the job.

I’m actually glad of the trolley jack, it’s one of those things I have been meaning to buy for donkeys, every time I’ve scraped my knuckles winding up a screw jack. And I still have hopes of buying a retirement project WW2 jeep to replace the one I shared with my ex-BiL years ago, so it’ll hopefully come in handy.

Just use one of these (other makes are available) and buy a new nut (which you’re going to anyway)

Not sure I’d get one of those on to it, it’s mildly inaccessible unless you’re using a deep socket. I’m hoping a bit of fire will sort it. Also hoping the local VW dealership carries those bolts as stock…

Yeah, hopefully he’s got one. He’s a proper tool hound so I wouldn’t be surprised. He was out on the piss when I rang him up and he just said he had something that’ll do the job.

Tidied up the starter battery box with a couple of busbars and some ply to take the ancilliary gear relays. Will finish this today and final work on the rest tomorrow. Solar panel is working ok, even in this shit weather there’s 20v.

New tyres , Turanza 6, on the front of the Hyundai yesterday as we have decided to keep it for the time being, and wifey plans to use it over the winter to commute.
Rear brake discs and pads on order for it. That is next weekends job.
Traced the slight loss of coolant to the hose at the bottom of the radiator. Will replace the crappy old clip with a shiny jubilee clip when I have a mo.

Alfa sorted. Couple of minor jobs to do over the winter. Make sure it is ready for the Italy trip next year. Sort of wishing I had one with the electric roof and air on. Couldn’t find a decent one of those when I bought this one.

Replacing rear discs on the Santa Fe did not go quite to plan.
Struggling to remove a bolt on the calliper bracket. Ended up rounding it. Fuck and bloody bollocks.
The bolt I did get out was rusty as fuck and will be replaced.

Gonna try and get some rounded bolt remover thingies from Screwfix and see how I get on. If that doesn’t work might have to see what local garage can do. Probably should have just got them to do it in the first place.
If that doesn’t work will just set it on fire and push it in a ditch.
Thinking I might get a garage to do the discs in the Alfa. That is twice as old and will no doubt be trickier.

Had a lot on at work over the last month or so and it’s been a bit wet and parky recently so haven’t spent much time in my workshop. I had an early appointment at the docs on Tuesday so I took the day off and spent some time on the Range Rover.

The fuel lines have been awkward as I’ve moved them to the other side of the chassis and I’ve ended up with a mix of copper and plastic lines. Took several attempts but I’m happy with the copper pipes.

Still a lot to do but if I should have a functioning fuel system sometime tomorrow :slightly_smiling_face:

Was delivered with a Myriad of things wrong with it, as all caterhams are! So now begins the process of righting almost 20 years of wrong!
