DIY speaker time

Gives an easy future upgrade though.

I wouldn’t go for really expensive drive units on your first go. Basic decent drivers sound great in a setup where they are optimally loaded and running at 1% of their capacity. The gains from going for real exotica are there, sure, but you could easily paint yourself into a corner if you drop ££££ on drivers that you can’t justify the financial loss if you have to change them.

I was very impressed with the Radian 2" 850PB, even just crossed over at 800Hz.

Thanks for the inputs people.

Time to learn sketchup, I found a model for the 825 but want to model the 828 cabinet out myself and maybe add more bracing as most people do this during the make.

Also been doing levelling castor porn research

I have some 2" compression drivers that you can borrow if you like. They are Great Plains Audio ones, I think model 390. I bought them off @Adpully and still haven’t plugged them in; you can borrow them for as long as you like (and buy them if you like them enough)

Edit: they’re 1.4", but rated down to 300Hz

I have a pair of Fane Colossus 18XB going spare if they would suit?
Not sure what Hornresp would make of their specs and what enclosure you’d end up with?

Stop it! Now I’m going to have to look.

Very kind Adam, but not sure which way to go with this yet. Have found some bass drivers and once I have drawn out the cabs and got them started I will probably start looking at a 2" and 1" probably.

Again very kind but I have some drivers coming

No worries, I wasn’t even sure they would fit your requirements but if you’re sorted no need to run the figures.
Looking forward to seeing the end result👍.

Material wise is Baltic ply the material of choice still? The originals were ply and later mdf, but people seem to prefer the ply ones.
Is it worth spending more on Baltic ply over normal ply?

The birch plywood is much nicer to work with, it has even layers whereas cheap ply doesn’t. If the ply is going to be on show then yeah birch for sure.

I haven’t decided on external finish yet something I’m going to have to think about. But considering how crap I was at veneering last time I tried, then definitely not that.

You can just stain or oil decent ply. There’s a lot to be said for that.

Had one of these a few years ago. V.similar to the A5 but done by Westrex here in the UK. I did run it in the middle of the room as part of a Mono set. It was a fun but fickle thing. Stu took it to Scalford and it sounded truly hopeless there. Going all vintage can be cool but may well pose all kinds of functionality issues. GPA drivers are popular for this kind of thing and may save you in the long run in terms of disappoint / faff frustrations.
