New puppy update.
Nellie has been here a week. We are all a little tired, which is to be expected.
As of yesterday, Nellie now stands by the back door when she needs a dump. Amazing! Weeing needs more work… (by the humans). Excellent progress has been made but regression is eminently possible once we go back to work next week. Mrs Waxy works from home though, so fingers crossed.
Nellie has met a few different people and has been exposed to traffic briefly. No issues with meeting new people, so thumbs up there so far.
Nellie likes toes. It hurts. There are many chew toys but they aren’t toes.
Command-wise, SIT is going well, closely followed by (lie) DOWN. We are also seeing some recognition of OFF (the sofa) and IN YOUR BED. Hopefully this isn’t in our collective imagination.
Chilling in the pen
Sounds great and she looks very cute
Consistency is everything with dogs so keep going and make sure the family use the same words to label the same actions to help Nellie to learn.
I’d recommend short labels for things - so BED is better than IN YOUR BED etc for recognition by Nellie.
Does she look at you when you say her name?
Yes, most of the time… another work in progress
So LOOK is a good one to practice. Hold a treat on her nose and draw it back and forth towards your eyes and say LOOK. When she looks at you say LOOK and give her the treat. Repeat about 3 times (don’t let her get bored).
Then you can say NELLIE, LOOK and again reward when she does. Then you can gradually drop the LOOK from the command (LOOK like TOUCH is a good basic for pups).
Congratulations on the training
Patch hated his bed we bought him,and would either attack it or shag it.
He sleeps on the bed,and basically rules the house, the little git
How’s the eye been?
So far so good. Thanks for asking Tony.
