Never too early to start with the essential parts of training.
Took us 6 month to get Max even started on settling down, but he was in an extreme outgroup of viciously abused dogs. Weāve had him ten years this year, making him around 16 now, and in the last few years heās finally become the soft-as-shite hairy twat he was always supposed to be before dog-fighting, hare-coursing, deer-poaching pikeys got hold of him and did their very worst.
Fuck anybody that condones that shit.
Iām convinced Fionn has spent his life in a kennel block on a farm in the boondocks of Ireland. Heās got no idea about anything even vaguely domestic or urban. Moving cars may as well be velociraptors, the telly is either an utter delight (Crufts) or a velociraptor delivery device (everything else), a new room might contain velociraptors, a comfy bed = velociraptor nest.
But heās such a sweet gentle boy, and heās starting to chill out a bit today.
What a beauty. Fabulous dogs. We used to holiday every year in a Cottage owned by a Crufts winning Red Setter breeder. Seeing and playing with a dozen fantastic Setters bounding about was incredibly special.
We think Tara had a similar start, she also came from Ireland, and had no clue how anything worked when we first got her, but fortunately she was confident and she had Max to learn a comprehensive range of bad habits from. She likely got turned-out on the road by a courser breeder when they discovered she couldnāt catch a cold ![]()
So now, at midnight, heās having zoomies! ![]()
Bless 'im - now thatās progress!
Love his big ginger paws!
They all just want a bit of love. Donāt we all, eh?
Thank you. Thatās given me a right fillip this evening.
That and watching berserker Belgian Malinois videos.
Nice to see the boy snuggling up and wanting to be close, always a good sign.
Heās really affectionate, a lovely gentle boy.
Weāve not worked out what commands heās been taught yet, if any. There was a suggestion he was a gundog that didnāt make the grade, and that kind of makes sense because he doesnāt like sudden noises or movements. So weāre starting from scratch really.
Heās great on the lead, stays at heel, near enough, on a short lead and doesnāt pull on a longer lead, which is great for Claire with her new hip. Last thing she needs is a dog that pulls. Ruby had her over a few times.
Not tried him off the lead yet, thatās this weekends test.
I wouldnāt worry about what commands heās been taught or learnt to ignore, heāll soon learn your ways and have you trained up in no time
He doesnāt appear to have done too badly up to now.
Mine would have rolled in something before getting on the bed.
Our dog has developed a keen taste for menstrual pads, and checks all bins nightly for her delicious treats. An urgent bin upgrade has taken place today!
His name is Arlo ![]()
