Oh I don’t know, the V20 and 869SE are pretty fine with the right speakers.
Nothing that I’d actually spend my own money on though.
The 509 is over rated, meh is what I say about it. I know what you mean, they all sound a little flat and lifeless, sort of emasculated and weak. 869SE suits Quad ESLs though.
£5k for a pre is a load of cash, especially as a new one is £9K and probably less with haggling.

What don’t you like about ear pre amps guys ? I remember Tom getting this 912 and they seem to have a very loyal following
Yes the 912 is nice, but the rest are meh. Wouldn’t personally spend that much on a box just to switch between inputs and adjust the volume

One of the most disappointing rooms at Munich was EAR, he was using some of those wanky old repro Grahams BBC monitors everyone raves about but it all sounded dull and flat to me. I’ve heard EAR a few times and it’s always detailed and accurate but just so fucking boring and lacking any engagement.
Nailed it. 
If EAR had any sense they would use Quad ESL (latest) with their demo’s. The owner uses ESL57s, so no surprise they suit each other. With cone speakers they sound restricted and weedy.

I had a V20, I rather liked it. I sold it to Tom, montesquieu, who sent it to sodders to get the power supply fooed up. Tom was hopelessly in love with it then, and really regretted when he had to sell it to free up some cash. He spent over a year trying to find another, finally got one paying hugely over the odds, and then decided that he preferred the AI Series 500 that he was using.
Those were the days.
This one’s got the Border Patrol HT supply.
