eBay stuff (Part 2)

In all honesty leaving it totally untouched may hold a similar value as ‘restored’ to SE Asia Man . I’ve found this the case with Radfords (Even restored by Radford Revival) TL12/1’s I actually got less for a fully restored one than an unrestored one… Why? There are perhaps a few illogical reasons. 1) Originality, unmolested nice condition artifacts are ‘things’. 2) Lack of trust in who did the work, how they did the work and what they put in. 3) They want the ‘fun’ / prestige / blogability of doing it themselves. Personally I would however test the PX4’s.

Seems a decent price currently.

Certainly seemed to pay off for the Pye Mozart set I recently sold. The Asian buyer was delighted that it hadn’t been restored at all. I’m not sure whether the same holds true for something more common like an ST20 though.

Yup , for the most part my experience also , particularly TCC Metal Pack and Super Metal Pack PIO capacitors …. A pair of PYE HF25’s I sold to Mad Collector Man in Hong Kong

For the most part original components means original sound for many Far East collectors

I suppose they do eat 100-year-old eggs.

All the same, it must be tough coping with reality if you can’t grasp that physical objects can change with time. The people who designed the amps, and first heard them, did so with new-production capacitors in. That would have been the original sound. Leaky, value-drifted old capacitors will sound less like that than new ones made the old way would.

There may also be the a masochistic element where HKMan likes to be part of the process in restoration. He wants to pick the magic spec, faff with options. Etc

I am acquainted with a vintage collector in Hong Kong who owns 86 pairs of LS35A’s of various makes …. Reality is an elastic concept for Japan / Hong Kong man

I got 86 problems but the LS3/5A ain’t one.

With vintage you are looking at an Artefact as much as an instrument. From an audio antique angle, restoring can be seen as sacrilege. You would not believe how many people want the aged / damaged / broken original parts along with a restored garrard. Or the calls for units that are completely original.
