Bit short on Mono funk films but this is my Grease bearing playing a STEREO funkish record. Perhaps you can get a sense of the energy and punch these old clunkers pack… (Filmed on my iphone)
Maybe of interest to @crimsondonkey ? Still on the hunt Wayne?
I had one for several years driving @Jim’s old Pass Alephs. It was very good, but it was not as nice as a REF 5SE I had in to try or the Pass Labs XP20 that eventually replaced it.
I’m taking my time auditioning stuff rather than going full on trial and error (although I wouldn’t entirely discount that as a possibility!).
As @htm_1968 suggests I’m probably starting at the Ref 5SE point of equivalents.
Playing with a nice autoformer pre at the moment with also another unit using a light variable resistor.
Whats the autoformer pre,i am using Tribute ones at the moment and they are very good.
“Stylus OK, lateral coil open circuit,
Strip down cartridge, replace faulty coil.”
Getting sorted
I remember the second Scalford when Serge had a pair of those in the Gun room…
I’m not sure if that’s a recommendation
It was a remembrance rather than a recommendation
3 days later, I’m still watching this…

Which platter are you using on your 301s Matt?
I have a CTC Classic 401 with the machined from solid top plate and the big brass bearing housing that Ray used to sell (i think a collaboration with SMD?). Think he has a new bearing of his own now?
I use the aluminium platter with the Tenuto and I feel they all help add detail whilst retaining that grip and drive.
Do you use any external psu? I have a Bastin psu which is pretty basic but the Hanze hifi one inyerests me.
I had the horrible engraved Garrard 401 font filled and the gloss black refinished and Ray sent me one of his badges.
Robin Wyatt is running a very similar machine in an OMA plinth and I think Artisan were using his 301 machined tops.
Lovely looking deck.
Personally I use a Shindo platter & bearing (often in combination with a Tenuto or sometimes a Dalby mat) in terms of PSU’s we’ve had quite a few - LDA’s more recent offering is normally used for testing prior to shipment, it locks 50Hz 230V well enough for observation / faffing purposes. The Hanze unit is probably the best we’ve had in (but I don’t go along with removing the break - Many Pro’s and cons here)
