I don’t think they open anything. Surely that would void any ongoing manufacturers warranty? Yet by not opening them how can you 100% authenticate. I imagine they offer the service many to keep sales flowing.
They don’t,
I saw a comment from someone who ended up with a cloned watch, when he want back to eBay they said they don’t open the back for all the reasons Dom said. They said that if the opened the back they would effectively be obliged to service the watch
I’m which case their ‘service’ of checking authenticity is useless tbh.
Pardon the thread necro…
I just sold one of my son’s model trains on eBay, £350. After a few days the buyer contacts me and says that one of the motor units doesn’t work properly, what to do?
I reply apologising, tell him to return it and I’ll issue a full refund. I’m dead happy to do this, it was rather cheap for what it was and given how many messages I got, I could get it fixed and sell it for more. I was also suspicious that the buyer might have been trying it on, after a discount.
eBay then pipe up with “we’re handling this return for you”, and say they’ll get back to me within a day. The next day, they say that they have refunded the buyer, I won’t get the train back and there is no cost to me - ie I keep the money.
So I’m kept whole here, the buyer has a free train and it’s all at eBay’s cost.
But surely this is ripe for fraud? I could sell something in awful condition, sell something to a partner in crime and get it refunded, all sorts of options.
Maybe I’m getting overly concerned for eBay’s business model when I imagine they’re doing just fine, but this whole thing just doesn’t really scan.
Don’t fret, give it another day and they’ll charge the sum to your account. I trust the cunts as far as I can throw 'em.
While it’s most likely some cunt trying it on, model train people are at least as anal-retentive as hifi people, and always find something wrong with everything.
Had similar with Amazon. They just wrote off over a hundred quid of theft, sent me another item. Cost of doing business and all priced in.
