Busy in here. Should be an interesting contrast to Jane Weaver tomorrow night
An evening in the chapel of the (now disused) General Cemetery
for a gig with Resonant Bodies (hammered dulcimer and nyckelharpa)
followed by Brighde Chaimbeul on Scottish small pipes
with a pint of a decent local brew
Arcane. Excellent.
One for the NW meatmen to check out?
@sjs maybe, be interesting to hear what it’s like.
Opened a couple if weeks ago, but havent had a chance to visit yet, it is v near Tom Ogdens bar (Blossoms)
Which plays v good music, through a surprisingly poor sound system
Last night was Steve Turner at my local folk club. Banjo and concertina (Wheatstone Aeola). Only 4 floor singers so we each did 5 songs.
Lucky he wasn’t mugged!
The banjo looked pretty nice too.
Bangor folk weekend. I may give tongue.
Mike Cooley of The Drive By Truckers tells a story of when he was asked to play banjo on a track on a record that someone else was making. He left plenty of time for the drive to the studio and stopped at a roadstop for breakfast.
He had a leisurely breakfast and was on his third cup of coffee when he realised he had left his banjo on the back seat in plain view of an unlocked pick up.
He hurried back really worried that the banjo might be gone and the studio time would be wasted.
When he got back he found two banjos on the back seat.
Yup, there are so many variants of that joke…
Drive-by abuser popping in to say that we’re in Manchester to see young Nadine tonight.
Sold out. Should be good.
Photo of last night’s show in Newcastle stolen from Twitter.
Half time with the Sons of Town Hall - well worth seeing if they show up near you.
They’re playing Cardiff and Didcot soon, they say…
edit later: and a few other venues
Best description I can think of is a fine vaudeville act - good vocals and guitar work on original songs held together with slick banter and a cover story that got all the audience laughing and involved.
Shit photo of a shit gig!
Andrew McCormac Trio (featuring Kyle Eastwood on bass) at The Glasshouse, Gateshead.
Seriously disappointing on a number of levels. The piano (a Steinway, unsurprisingly) sounded worse than my 10 year old Roland digi, the drum sound had zero kick drum, Kyle’s bass sound lacked any definition, making everything he played difficult to hear (which quite frankly was a blessing).
This would all be forgivable was it not for the fact that it was the small hall, seating 125 and one in which I’ve seen many bands all of whom sounded great. Biggest disappointment of all tho’ was the total lack of subtelty and dynamics in any of the playing, compounded by the fact that the only notes Kyle played in tune were open strings. Seriously, I’ve been playing bass (including fretless, badly) for years and it was painful to listen to. I know its s’posed to be JAZZ
but ffs… Pitching isnt everything in music, but without anything else redeeming it was all that remained to rescue the music!..
Rant over, other than to say it took so long to get out of the car park after the gig I missed both kfc and my local Tesco, so am now frustrated, hungry and sober!..
I’ve had better evenings! ![]()
Been listening to that this evening (we’re doing the same gig at the Scala tomorrow).
