Gigs I'm going to. The Gyroscope diaries

Sausages.

so, big crowd already for Dry Cleaning (as interesting as they sound).

Gonna be a lot of crispy critters later.

Upchuck (the clue’s in the name) have been listening to a lot of RATM and Bad Brains.

Now hanging around before David Holmes spins up the wheels of steel. The DJ booth / stand is a tiny oddity but I’ve seen some great stuff there over the years - Jazzy B, Norman Jay, Digweed etc.

Helena Hauff.

None of your USB sticks here - all vinyl.

Dig around in the crate, mix it in, do a little dance, go for another dig.

I would be mainlining the Big Top Tent from 15:25 to close. That is quite an exceptional lineup.

Yes, not a duffer on there.

Tiny room for The Janitors gig…glad I have ear protection!

Edit:

Nice gig, despite one dead microphone and one dead bass guitar. A spare bass was found. Had a nice chat with one of the guitarists. I mentioned that this was the second gig at the Crofters where I had seen a bass implode.

Treated myself on the way out.

Imagine tickets will be hard to get

Fidelio with the LA Philharmonic at the Barbican.

Even I could see that it was quite an unusual production. All deaf actors signing the words and vibe, paired up with singers doing the actual singing.

Kicked ass. The baddy got his, and it really annoyed Daily Mail Granny sitting next to me because they used the word “inclusion” in the opening blurb, and she imagined that she saw a rainbow in the lighting at one point.

Brighton Dome tonight.
Support from Thea Gilmore who I have seen many times on her own so a win win

Going with Rich (Dicy) from the Wam.

Beth Gibbons tonight.

Completely sold out so, it being the Barbican, we got accosted by the world’s poshest tout.

An absolute one-off, a gig for the ages.

I’d love to know who the rest of the (highly talented) personnel were, particularly the Guru Josh figure playing all the made-up instruments, including some sort of sub contra bass exhaust pipe thing.

Glad to read the positive comments. I’m going on to see her on Tuesday evening at Usher Hall.

Sorry, I actually meant to tag you to say “absolutely do not miss”.

I know it’s all subjective, but.

Here’s some of them
Not least the funereal mallet work on the drums from James Ford, one of her main collaborators on the album; reedy colouring from a double-bass clarinet (über-talented Howard Jacobs, who also plays vibraphone, hammer dulcimer, tin whistle, flute and a variety of percussion), providing a suitably rich swathe of sound that complements eerie and unusually pitched backing vocals, and swirling riffs from a violin (Emma Smith) and viola (Richard Jones) that sweep across the often cinematic panorama of th deftly assembled sound. Smith’s violin produces surprising and ghostly weeping sounds on “Whispering Love”, while Jones’s viola enhances the strings’ overall tone with the instrument’s characteristic fuller timbre.

One half of Simian (Mobile Disco).

Little known fact: I replaced either him or his oppo in a particularly ill-fated mobile telephony startup ~2008. Pretty certain it was him.

Come to think of it there might be a lost pension there.

The wankers tried to exile me to Georgia, the country not the US state, when there was a blanket “do not travel” advisory from the FCO.

London is a lot of things, but it ain’t walkable.

Enjoy the gig.
