Gigs I'm going to. The Gyroscope diaries

Couple of photos from John Grant last night. Absolutely phenomenal gig. The segue from just him at the piano to a version of Pale Green Ghosts that hit so hard it made the album version sound like Moonlight Sonata was just wild. Couldn’t recommend more highly. Liverpool Philharmonic Hall also bringing some excellent acoustics, balanced out by some of the most ungodly uncomfortable seating I’ve ever encountered. Me knees were genuinely sore by the end of it.

I also feel like his studio albums actually undersell how good his voice is too. There’s a richness that’s just glorious.

Couple of good small scale shows that have been recent highlights;

Huey from FLC at Stratford Playhouse, Q&A evening with some great BB King/Bowie/Keith anecdotes. Albarn and Kravitz got a not so glowing mention, great storyteller.

Submotion Orchestra, at Bristol Beacon last night. Absolutely ruled. So so good. The best I’ve seen them I think. For my taste, one of the best bands in the UK. Third time this year that I’ve been to the Beacon (ex Colston Hall) 52 million (apparently) refurbishment, has resulted in a really great place to see live music. This was in the smaller Lantern Hall. L-Acoustics system, sounding immaculate. Much enjoy.

Wow that’s a fair chunk of money! Have you been since the refurb? I didn’t go there in its older incarnation, so I’m curious what people think about it. I can’t comment on the expenditure really, whether it was a valid use of funds or whatever, not being from Bristol or being abreast of the politics, but I know that it feels like a world-class venue, that I automatically consider coming back to now. I wonder what’s the ownership of it, if the refurb was state-funded?

Yes, have been a couple of times. It is nicely done but so, so expensive.

Eddie Chacon tonight.

Absolutely sublime - his voice is sounding amazing and backed by some amazing young musicians. Some excellent new songs from his forthcoming album as well.

I did this one thirty years ago, but with the 9pm → 3am I don’t think I’ll be doing it again :grinning:

Just been to Pagliacci from Mid Wales Opera, at Colwyn Bay. Quintet accompaniment. Piano, cello, harp, violin, clarinet. Jolly decent from second row seats. Moshpit pure dead mental.
