Halftime at the Vidya-Lisolotte Sundberg / Rob Luft gig. Dreamy jazz with occasional rocky outcrops. Mirko Scarcia on bass, and Corrie Dick on drums. Excellent gig.
We will be seeing Kate Rusty at Folk by the Oak next month. Wifey quite likes her.
Before that is the epic event that is Harrold Fest.
The third act tba is Steve Warner. Just arranged the booking last night.
Just got to sell enough tickets now.
Wait until Afrika Shox
This will be my fourth on maybe even fifth time. They bring a gun level sound system to a knife fight venue.tremendous!
Brilliant !
Tonight was extraordinary. Crowd age 40-55, not one single person giving a fuck. It was lovely. Regret I wasn’t on the fun stuff most of my fellow fans were.
This doesn’t surprise me - never seen them live at all, but I remember reading an interview in something like Mixmag when Rhythm and Stealth came out, and one of them talking about the fact that the more bass you have in a track, the wider the groove is in the vinyl (think that’s right) and so the greater the risk of the needle skipping out of the track, especially in a nightclub environment. Love that level of technical consideration!
You should try to remedy that and go see them if you get a chance. The walls, and my coat, were vibrating with the bass. It’s an experience
I think I would have to take earplugs with me for that kind of volume!
Another largely Irish melodeon and fiddle night at Cafe#9, this time with piano too. The Weaving, a trio who will be heard a lot more in the folk scene soon. Very good.
In case you haven’t seen this Steve
Bonnie Rait at the O2 Apollo last night. Don’t really know much of her back catalogue at all - I primarily went because a good friend of mine who is blind wanted to go, and it would have basically been impossible for him otherwise. I’d heard Used to Rule The World from Slipstream, and that was literally it, and I decided to keep it that way because it’s rare to get a first impression of a top class artist via a live performance. Bit I knew that if nothing else, I was going to be seeing some fantastic musicians play, even if the music wasn’t to my liking. Turns out the music was all very much to my liking, loads of blues, funky stuff going on, lots of slide guitar and Hammond organ etc. Also, her voice is still phenomenal, even at 75! There was an embargo on filming and photography during the show, but she was fine with photos at the end, so I got a few hurried snaps:
