Nice to see that among the destruction of the LA fires someone was smart enough and sufficiently prepared to make the effort for their home not to become part of the problem
The city needs to put a lot of this stuff into their building code, as they have for earthquakes, and ideally before the rebuilding starts. But if they’re not prepared to then maybe the insurers will.
One half of this story sits in the cockpunch thread but the other I thinks sits here. I am going for the positive as I have seen/felt enough negativity this week from the US.
Potential for economic M.A.D. if the US were (e.g.) to simply continue to raise tariffs. China will certainly feel the pain if its biggest market effectively shuts the door - but then, so will the US… And us… And everyone…
Having a chuckle as Musk tries to take the EU to court for their 7.5% tariffs on Teslas made in China being imported to the EU. BMW are hacked off too as they could be paying over 20% for imported components.
I feel these stories are often at best 50:50 on the good news front. The fact the entire problem is man made in the first place does detract from the overall picture.
Reminds me of those “feel good” stories you see in the USA in particular of kids doing chores to pay off friend’s lunch debts, or people giving up college funds to cover the costs of a family member’s surgery. They just underline how insanely broken the US system is.
