Today traveling from Beaumaris to Aberporth. Basically through Snowdonia (shit photo through car window)
stopping at Dolgellau. I liked Dolgellau - quiet and a bit stuck in the 70s.
Then we basically hacked down the west coast, stopping at Aberystwyth (no thanks)
Aberaeron (4.5, would definitely Aberaeron again)
and finally to the hotel about a mile above Aberporth.
The hotel is quite odd. The decor is 100% Hogwarts, and the atmosphere is one of enforced relaxation - do I look like I want a fucking board game?
Fall down the hill to find that Aberporth is a beautiful little bay, perfect for kids and dogs. And old duffers wheezing between benches.
Shared mackerel and chips watching the sun go down.
Can confirm that the climb back up to the hotel is a beeyotch.
Car definitely needs a new exhaust
Was in South Wales last summer and this, and found much the same. Shocking road planning everywhere. S.
E.g. it took me an hour to drive 10 miles from Cardiff to Barry Island. There seems to be a hatred of flyovers, sliproads and the like, so on motorways and A roads every few miles there’s a roundabout. So you’re constantly accelerating to 70mph, then as you get there, have to start braking to a stop again. Great for fuel efficiency. I love the country but am beginning to fear going back, it makes for thoroughly unpleasant road tripping.
I was a bit underwhelmed by New Quay although it did (understandably) smell quite strongly of fish the day we were there.
Aberporth → Lampeter → Brecon → Abergavenny → Ross → (shrug) → Cirencester.
Not exactly Route 66.
The countryside round Lampeter (in fine weather) was quite something.
