Socialsm is terrible
Stay at the Park Plaza!
It’s got Wi-Fi and Health and Safety!
5G and foil hats?
If you’re staying near Nørrebro , Fredericksburg Øil bar is good for a few drinks
So yesterday was the last day of our break and we headed from the lively town of Scafati to neighbouring Pompeii and the ‘Scavi’ (excavations). We’d been advised to stick our heads into Pompeii’s very impressive church.
Then on into the ruins. Gill & I last visited in 1986
Quite a bit of infrastructure had been added for entry and exit, it seemed many more houses were accessible. A lot more visitors too.
There’s been quite a bit on TV recently about new excavation on the site at Casa Aquila and they’ve put a structure incorporating a walkway and roof above the ongoing work so you’re watching stuff being uncovered in front of you. You’re not allowed to take pics in this area (secured media rights?) but it’s fascinating to watch, and to wonder what they’ll find in the rooms still filled with ash/debris.This and the Casa del Misteri were the highlights for me.

FoL grabbed a good one of two lizards we saw fighting.
Casa del Misteri has some extraordinary frescoes. They’ve not really satisfactorily interpreted what the rituals depicted really represent but there’s oral sex going on in part of it!
Then back to base before our excursion to the Amalfi coast road.
So, having got back, cooled down, had a rest & some lunch, FoL wanted to go & explore Naples’ Centro Historico whereas I still wanted to go and see & drive some of the Amalfi coast road. We could get there via the Autostrada which took us to Vietri, a very pretty little town and then we headed West.
The road clings to some very steep slopes performing endless twists and turns, occasionally also climbing or dropping very suddenly. The traffic comprises mostly small cars but also mopeds, motor scooters and the odd ebike all weaving in and out past the cars and negotiating the many hairpin bends with ease. But incredibly there’s a single decker bus service going along and I still can’t see how they’d get it around some of the corners especially if there’s another bus or other long vehicle going in the other direction.
We stopped at the town of Maiori and spent some time swimming at the nice beach then continued through Minori and eventually out and up through Ravello. If you’re ever down that way in a car, have a drive along part of it. Utterly mental but very beautiful too. Yesterday was hazy but still very hot and we had some nice views of the bay and Vesuvius as we descended back into the city.
Evening was proper Neapolitan pizza with FoL; one a Margarita the other a Diavolo with hot chorizo bits. Both delicious.
Awesome. Seems a fab holiday.
It was, enough variety yet plenty to go back for. I fancy the lakes and Bergamo, Siena, Bologna Verona. It’s a great country to spend time in.
Siena is ace. Mini Florence by the looks of it.
While not nearly as big as Florence (no bad thing) Siena is an extraordinary place.
Just standing in the Piazza Del Campo is an amazing feeling. We also found a tiny pizzeria - La Trofea - behind La Mossa restaurant and had some of the best slices of pizza we’ve ever tasted.
Hopefully it’s still as good as it’s been a few years since we were last there.
Amalfi coast drive in an Abarth 695 is on my bucket list!
It still surprises me to think about that Interrailing trip in 1986, we got down as far as Syracuse in Sicily, that it could be done without a mobile phone or the internet. Such a different time.
I’ve never been on a road like it, ridiculous. Both the views, and the concentration needed especially when oncoming traffic comes round a blind bend on your side of the road as happens quite often.
Real memoriws being made. Wonderful.
Sienna is fantastic
The Palleo is obviously a great (and busy AF) time to go, but we were there a few years ago the week after and there was still a great post-Palleo carnival atmosphere
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that film although I was aware of it. Will have to try & find a copy.
We used to go to Plemont beach cafe most mornings for breakfast. Was a great way to start the day.
