Holidays

I’m getting increasingly fretty about this - first world problems I know. But given how stiff and wobbly I am at the moment, navigating a large unfamiliar station in 20 minutes might well leave me bollocksed.

The alternative is a 2hr20 change, arriving in Brussels 19.35, which is late but not a disaster.

I’ve already paid for the original tickets so my question / straw poll is: for €61.99 would you buy a backstop ticket now?

DB are wankers so the tickets are airline pricing and will only go up the closer I get to travelling. I assume that buying on the day if I miss my connection will be very ouchy indeed.

Not sure how stiff or wobbly you are but as a disabled person I use the passenger assistance services in the uk and they are super helpful

20 mins should be enough and it’s not like German transport won’t run on time

Luxembourg Ault Ville is nice. Not too busy. Weather is just about holding. A few light showers, but OK.

Late breakfast at local cafe (I refuse to pay €29 per person at the hotel ) the off to do tourism…

The Pfaffenthale..

Then beer…

To answer my own question, I also asked a local friend

For anyone considering similar journeys

  1. ICE trains are mostly punctual
  2. The “DB Navigator” app mostly mitigates risk. You can get the usual information like platforms, and it recommends alternatives if you miss your connection

My one, admittedly unsolicited, tip if you’re still there this evening is Café des Tramways

ISTR good beer etc. and the food was also tasty.

If you see (hear) and extraordinarily loud, blonde Norn Irish woman it’s the wife’s cousin.

Penultimate leg…Luxembourg to Brussels.

Cheap @ €26 each. Quite comfortable, not that fast, and it’s stopping service. Still, we have plenty of time…

Not really a holiday but a couple of nice days down on the Lizard in Cornwall, then across to the Minack theatre.

Mullion Cove

We need to acknowledge more foundering in our lives.

Coverack Harbour

Cadgwith

Serious horns at Lizard point

Nice to briefly be the most Southerly person on mainland Britain and to be at a latitude starting with a 49. I thought you couldn’t do it on the mainland & had to go to Scilly but apparently not.

On to the lovely Kynance Cove for a dip.

Then on Tuesday up the W side of the Lizard taking in Poldhu Cove, Church Cove, Loe Bar, Porth Leven, Praa Sands (for a swim) and eventually the Minack theatre.

Church Cove

Loe Bar, a sand/shingle beach with a freshwater lagoon behind it

Porth Leven harbour

Praa Sands

Penberth with its old, man operated boat winch (which needs some restoration work)

Minack theatre, filling up.

A good few choughs flew past, we did see a gannet circling & several seals were cavorting about, feeding on shoals of fish close to the shore.

Mullion Cove, I can see a face on the right hand rock emerging from the sea and a sportsman on the larger rock to the right. Zooming in spoils the illusion, or is it just me and I need a jacket with long sleeves, straps and buckles.

Nup, it’s you. Cardboard loos, sinks and cutlery here we come.

I was afraid of that, are you sure they look so real ?

Bye, bye, Bruxelles. You’ve changed significantly over the last 4 years and not for the better. You have to dig deeper and search more to get the best out of you now.
Too many burger joints, Italian restaurants, and much less “local” food with shorter beer lists.
We still enjoyed your charms though…

Next stop Londres :+1:

Not exactly a holiday as such but first time off Shetland for two years kinda qualifies it. Hopefully I’ll arrive in Hartlepool by Monday afternoon.

Leaving Fetlar and my girls behind was a wrench

A few hours to kill in Lerwick, I’ve never seen it so busy

The cause became obvious when I got to the harbour and saw a floating hotel anchored near the harbour

The several thousand inmates were on day release and were packing the streets

Severn class :+1:

I guess kind of unsurprising given the somewhat tasty seas around you.

Nice to see visiting yachts flying the correct courtesy ensign.
I long ago ceased to be surprised at how many boats (including commercial shipping) fly the Union Flag rather than the Red ensign.

Dullard expectations. Nobody needs to know that.

The World is all about self, donchaknow?

First in the queue to board the Hrossey

Enjoy your time away. Well earned.
