2nd speaker built, managed to get both out of a single sheet of MDF so pretty happy with that.

Trying some 4th order Bessel filters, promising but some hardness in the treble which I need to find the source of. One speaker has a spike at 1kHz which could well be the culprit. This version using the Faital HF10AK/LTH102 combo.

Using without legs at the moment as I only have one set, and made a change to a slot port which is a bit neater.

I had a cold at the start of the week (as always on a week off work) so not making any judgments either way as my hearing is all over the place!

Bit of an update, I got to Thursday last week and not really getting to a great balance.

I decided I would try the Scanspeak 10F/8414 & D2004/6010 (VSS1) featured earlier upthread and after some comparisons with my Marshall Choong CM2s as a base, I got a really ‘good’ sounding speaker with LR4 around 500Hz & 4kHz. I managed to level match and used my DIY switching box so I can go between the passive and active systems, really handy!

Using the CM2 as a basis, really helped to get the balance correct in room which got it sounding really good, although lacking the dynamics of the Veravox/HF10AK (VV1) combo but with better balance and smoothness.

Feeling much better about the project as a whole but still some way to go, nice to have various configurations to play with though!

I’m putting the DIY stuff into storage as I just don’t have time now for all the playing around with DSP etc, and not getting any further along so will revisit at a later date.

I’d love to try something in a simpler system (ahead of baby arriving), ideally with the Decware Zen I still have.

Been recomended these, I don’t think I’ve ever heard any vintage Altec speakers, the cabinets are not to my taste but I can sort that…

 :joy:  :joy:

The 201s are available :grinning:

Cabinets I can do, endless measurement and testing, less so!

In true style, ended up with some NS1000Ms and knocked some stands together this morning.

Think Tannoy sound but slightly more shouty on the 605’s (At least the ones I’ve heard) .Only had them with standard xover so it might be fun for digi network / better cabs. They used them in Abbey Rd’s Studio 2. The thing with these is they hold their money if the drivers themselves are clean / matching.

Early thoughts on the Yam’s?

Still don’t think I’ve ever heard a pair

Ian, Bagawire from the Wam used to take his to Scalford on a regular basis.
Also had legendary bake offs where his MIL used to do the catering.
Jamaican patties, Jerk Chicken and Curry Goat to die for. :+1:

I’m pleased so far, seem to be very happy close to the back wall. The Pots need a clean as there is a crackle when you move them, just been listening with both pots on ‘0’.

There was a guy on the Wam ( shaky maybe ? ) who had a thread refurbing a pair.

@Valvebloke has a pair as well IIRC.

I ‘sort of’ do. Mine are the domestic ones, not the studio monitors. The tweeter and mid-range drivers are identical but I’m not certain about the woofers. The mesh guard that’s present on the M’s woofer is absent on mine. My cabinets are a few cm larger than the Ms’ ones and each box is 8kg heavier (31kg for the M, 39kg for the domestic Yamaha NS-1000 | Hifi-Wiki). One of the reasons I like them for valve amp work is that they’re quite sensitive: 90-91dB/W @ 1m.

Yeah I gather the only difference is the cabinet, with the non M version having birch ply cabs and lovely ebony veneer. I’ve heard these at Graeme’s before, with that lovely Radford!

Had no idea they were that heavy.
