They are on the awkward side, just about ok on your own to move…
I took them to Scalford a few times. Fortunately young Rob @hoopsontoast was often there to give me a hand up the stairs with them .
As for the weight, part of the sensitivity might be due to big (=heavy) magnets on the drivers. And the cabinet walls are pretty thick.
I liked the sound of the ones that Geoff (@oldius) had, which he drove with a Lentek amp.
I heard them sound very good chez Geoff with a Nakamichi amp too.
Those hypex modules / cases you have were designed to fit the exact screw holes on the back of the Yamaha NS 1000 cabinets . So you can fit them straight onto the back without drilling new holes in the cabinets.
The modules can be tuned to the Yamahas and sound pretty cool if you can get them to work in your room. I just preferred my valve amps on the end of them. When done right those Yamahas do go even cleaner and the bass is better controlled with the modules on. Tuned to your taste and room of course.
That had not actually occured to me despite seeing your photos, I’m done with faff for a bit so maybe in the future when I break them out of storage!
Enjoying them as is for the moment though!
Yep, they were on the back of my Yamahas originally, they came as a package and the frames were sensitively made not to impact on the original design if removed. When I first heard them in the environment that they were tuned for they sounded absolutely stunning and I had heard them many other times in their standard form but with the hypex modules on and tuned properly I found they went up another level. I soon found out though that I would have to re tune them for my rooms and couldn’t be bothered with the faff, computers, microphones etc. so I took them off and slapped the valves on them.
So a bit of an update after a week or two.
I really like these, manage to properly integrate into the room where I am getting some quite fantastic and supprising bass punch despite the sealed cabinet. Just seems to me to be very well balanced top to bottom (with the adjustments still on 0 for both) and the speakers flat against the back wall so guessing around 30-degrees off axis.
Certainly up there with my ideal speaker ‘that just does the least wrong’.
I did try them with the Decware Zen for shits and giggles, more shit and less giggle! Sounded Ok and although I think they are quite easy to drive impedance wise, and somewhat efficient just did not work at all. Much happier with the modest Bryston B60R.
At some point I’ll sort some more ‘finished’ stands, maybe some nice Cherry timber as I quite like the chunky legs vibe…
I made some stands using 3” pipe and threaded bar through the middle that looked pretty good. Cutting the pipe square was a pain though.
I got a friend with a metal shop, to do it with a chop saw.
Should of said that this was with plastic drain pipe. I did wonder if a wood chop saw would have worked, just didn’t fancy trying it though.
Hi Rob, I’ve seen that you gave up on the 2500.4 project. Would you consider selling the quad?
Hi Matti, they are long sold I’m afraid
I still have plenty of other bits I’m keeping for future projects though, the Volt’s were just taking up too much space.
Thanks for your message. That’s a pity. Did you overall liked the bass performance?
I did, I ended up with them sealed (as opposed to ported in the cabinets I made) but placed right up against the walls which gave a really tight punch in the bass, just at far higher volume levels than I really play now with a little one in the house! Two per side should be enough output for any reasonable sized room, even at high levels they were barely moving and making the doors rattle!
Still planning a paired down DIY speaker to go with my Decware Zen in the ‘Library’ system for use late night, revisiting my greatest hits, either the Goodmans Axiom 201 or Supravox 165GMF. I’ve found mint bargain singles of each driver, so will keep a look out for another of each to make a pair.
That sounds good. We need them for monitoring in a listening bar, but with 4 meters distance to the booth. On the website they wrote “near field” so I was a bit concerned if they will work regarding the distance.
And I know what you mean, I’ve a 1,5 year old little one (-:
I can highly recommend Altec 755, one of the finest 8" driver. There are some great cabinet plans by Dr.Bae of Silbatone.
Oh the BM2500.4 would be more than fine for that I’d have thought. There are these, just a pair and I’m not sure on the difference between the BM2500.1 and BM2500.4 as the former is not a current model.
Thank you! If I understand it right the 25001 is a pure bass driver.
The B2500.1 is just a bass driver (current model) but the BM#### range are usually good up to 1-2kHz+ at least, certainly in my experience with the BM2500.4, BM251.3 and BM220.8.
Could be worth a quick chat with Volt to comfirm.
