Horn manufacturer options for DIY

This I understand…

It’s shit mate. I’m still not out of it but trying to keep the project going.

Wouldn’t expect anything less.

I have some Edgar Horn tractrix midrange boxes that should work from 500Hz to around 5kHz with dynaudio D54 dome drivers

What has happened to Stereo Lab? Their web domain is for sale.

Auto tech, but Greg…

They pop up on ebay from time to time. Are you crossing digitally? That might allow a smaller horn, say a 330Hz for 500Hz XO as you can go steeper. If analogue then you want a 250Hz horn or so. What driver/throat?

Would be great as this is the range I’d like to cover but using something made of silk goes against my principles, so unless another driver can be used they’d be no good for me.

Thanks for the offer.

This is the one I was trying to find. Affordable so probably nobody bought them :person_facepalming:

Fair enough, I liked them because the HF breakup is very well controlled.

If you want to try them out I do have a pair of D54 AF drivers

I imagine they sound wonderful, I just don’t agree with the use of silk in anything. My life choices always make things more difficult for me. It’s got nothing to do with hi-fi, probably a great solution. Any reason another driver couldn’t be used with those horns?

To be fair compression drivers usually have very hard diaphragms, they have to achieve high pressure after all. Metal is pretty standard!

But why not borrow them and get something running? Would allow you to get on with the crossover and the like, then you can pounce when the right horns come up.

The D54’s are soft dome though and made of silk, which I don’t want to use (I know, I’m an awkward cunt). I’m actually sorting out my kitchen and sitting room too and should have space, plus some money, in the new year to sort this stuff out.

Also, I have the crossover sorted.

I have some extremely steep passive crossovers from Al Klappenberger. I’m trying to determine which driver and horn as a package.

I haven’t finished yet, give me a chance!

No problem with your choices, but I cant find anything suggesting they are made of silk. The data sheets describe them as 54mm doped fabric.
Obviously I may not have all the facts, but they don’t look anything like 1 inch silk tweeter domes

Don’t Avant Garde use soft dome like midrange drivers in their mid horns?

Interesting, I was trying to find out and couldn’t really find much but saw something mentioning it with reference to soft dome so might have not been specifically referring to these. I’ll look into it more. If not I’d be very interested.

I have the AF version, not sure if they are V1 or V2 tbh

and the horns look like this:

I am fine with you loaning them as a stop gap if you have other longer term plans

G-Point no longer bring in the Autotech horns, you have to buy direct from Poland. I bought 200Hz JMLC horns from the German Ebay seller linked to above by nafaiutb. Not sure they are as sturdy or as well made but about half the price of Autotech.
I would get a set of 200 or 250Hz horns from him or Autotech, buy a pair of Axi 2050, B&C DCX 464 or Faital Pro 1440 and cover 300 / 400 Hz to 7 / 8kHz on the one horn with your tweeter solution above and 15" solution below.
I have Axi 2050 covering 330hz all the way up with an 18" OB below down to 35Hz and a BK XLS 400 below 35Hz. Give me a shout and you can come over and have a listen.

That’s great I’d love to check it out. You’re making me think of too many changes to the plan!

I like the idea of one horn/driver without the need to try to position a tweeter relative the the larger horn.
