Actual red velvet cake is very nice. The frosting is made from cream cheese and is slightly sour rather than sweet.
It’s a vanilla cake base with a small amount of cocoa powder added. The cocoa powder gives the cake a finer crumb (hence the velvet name) and in the 1800s before Dutch processed was available was responsible for the “red” look (now food dye)
That being said, those buns sound terrible

I bought a pack of HCBs the other day, when I got home I thought they looked very dark , on closer inspection they turned out to be

We too tried some Tesco buns. The superior ‘Finest’ ones.
‘Finest’ is a misnomer.
Adequate is closerer to the mark.
I added cheese and sriracha :+1:
