Seems to me that given their piss poor reactions to the unfolding pandemic, the government policy is simply to spread the deaths over a longer period.
The government’s response to the crisis reminds me, more than anything, of that bit in Apocalypse Now when Kurtz asks “Are my methods unsound?” and Willard replies “I don’t see any method at all, sir”

Care for the elderly and pensions are the biggest costs in most western economies. More than one economist/official will have looked at the age profile for Covid deaths and done a mr burns.
The BBC get a lot of stick on here, much of it deserved, but this opening to Newsnight, delivered by Emily Maitlis, is more like the standard of reporting we should be getting as the norm, rather than the exception.

This is one home around the corner from me. It is a wonderful purpose built facility which I visited a couple of times last year to talk to the residents. Sadly residents and particularly the staff have been more than decimated (in the classical sense). Two-thirds of the staff are off ill or are self-isolating. It cannot be unique.
