Pretty good aren’t they ?
They bloody ought to be for the price
I would need a quad for my amps and just could not justify it
Yes, and if what I’ve read about burn-in is to be believed, they will get a lot better.
100 - 200 hours seems to be required. I wonder if that refers to the amp just being on or music actually being played
Fuck that I would just enjoy them for what they are now.
But you’d spend that much on a watch, no problem.
Also, you mentioned that your WEs are getting on a bit?
Oh, I definitely will.
In 5 years time I would still have the watch.
Spurious argument anyway, you may as well say you would spend more on a house.
Keep up, I replaced the WEs two years ago
Anyhow, I said I couldn’t justify the cost, I didn’t say that you couldn’t
Soz, I had the impression (fuck knows where from) that they were a lot older than that.
So, are they NOS or the new WEs?
The WEs were a lot older than that, I had them 10 years.
I replaced them 2 years ago
I don’t have WEs anymore.
I now have LV300B
I’ve not herd them Kev, how do they stack up against the WE’s - I’m due a new set mine are getting on a bit (Been putting it off)
They don’t have the liquid gold midrange of the WE but have a tighter better defined bass and perform well over the range. They were a definite upgrade to my WEs, but they were quite tired, I didn’t compare the LV to new WE.
Sounds like the KR 300bs (I think the LV’s are made by KR) I used to have, all round tighter than the WE’s but not as fluid / fulsome in the mids (Which is where their magic lies)
They are made by KR but to a LV spec with a nunber of changes to materials.
I would say that is fair.
The LVs have a lot of joy and are big and colourful with a palpable performance, the new WEs are rich and smooth and very coherent and do that musicallity and sense of a group of musicians playing together the older ones do so well, the Taks are a bit less meaty but have oodles of filigree and inner detail but without sounding clinical of hifi, quite beautiful.
I have had days when each has been my favourite, depending on the system, and the mood
So are you saying that Jim needs a set of each type really?
After hearing from Mark about his experiences having all three in his Art Audio on an extended audition, I was only really considering the WE and the Tak. Mark preferred the Taks, so I suppose I was already leaning in that direction. What swung it for me though was during a long chat with Kevin at Definitive, he mentioned that he’d had several failures of the new WEs, but the Taks have proved to be 100% reliable.
Interesting to hear new WE’s aren’t necessarily that robust. I considering a quad of one of Kevins top end 300b and the historical long life of the WE’s was part of my thought process. Will be speaking to Kevin early next year so will see what his view then is.
EH golden grids are the best ones.
This is what I persuaded myself after looking at some of the prices of 300B’s.
