LTNs, 20mph etc. Traffic calming, or the war on motorists

A mate once confessed that his ultimate threesome would be Victoria Coren Emily Maitless and Susie Dent.

I think in recent years Hannah Fry has made a guest appearance.

Perhaps Victoria could give him some maths lessons after

Yeah, "a mateā€™.

Presumably if said mate acutally participated it would technically be a fantasy foursome.

Arenā€™t golfists known for foursomes?

They are also known for fourballs but letā€™s not go there.

The road named is literally outside my front door.

They would be better off targeting poor people driving their kids to the local comps in polluting old bangers.

Tell me you didnā€™t read the article without etc.

At my sonā€™s school, a mother picks her kid up in a Land Rover, and they live a five minute walk away. The car barely fits on the road. It would almost be faster to walk to the school than drive in traffic and find somewhere to park.

Yebbut ā€¦ sheā€™s paid for a Land Rover. Not using it would be tantamount to admitting that sheā€™d made an inappropriate decision. And what if a drop of rain were to fall on little Jeromeā€™s head ? And then thereā€™s being noticed. A Land Rover gets you noticed (letā€™s face it, even youā€™ve noticed  !)

If she left it at home to walk the kids to school it would be stolen, the only way to keep a LR safe is to drive it 24/7

God invented cars for a reason.

All the above are right.

I meant to add itā€™s surely not worth the mental stress - if I lived close to the school Iā€™d absolutely walk rather than drive. Forget environmental reasons, getting stuck in school run traffic and parking is hateful and headache inducing.

But again, see above replies.

I wonder if some of this is due to people feeling unsafe on the streets and public transport.

I remember after 7/7 buses were a lot less busy than normal for a few weeks. And nobody wanted to go upstairs.

Maybe we just werenā€™t as precious in our day?
I had to walk a 3 mile round trip from the age of 12.
Worldā€™s becoming too soft.

itā€™s just that cars never started very well in the 70ā€™s

I had a 1 mile walk to the train station, a 30min train journey and then a 2 mile walk to school from the age of 12 on my own.

Actually they did 'cos they were relatively new. Itā€™s just that our parents couldnā€™t be arsed.

I have everything short of my testicles crossed that my son is being allocated a place in the secondary school behind my house. The idea of not having to go near my car around school entry and egress times is AMAZING.

Not in our case, my parents could only afford one car and in the 70ā€™s it was a secondhand Fiat 124

When I actually worked in an office one of my possible routes took me past Danes Hill Preparatory School in Oxshott (private).
Oxshott is a posh part of Surrey, Andy Murray lives there etc.
There is often dreadful traffic caused by a queue of trophy wives in their Range Rovers and other top brand SUVs with one child, all trying to get off the A224 on to the ā€˜School roadā€™.

I was in the office bemoaning the time it took to ā€˜get past that school for disabled childrenā€™.
One of the women at work corrected me and said " Danes Hill is not a school for disabled children"
ā€œWell I have never seen one of them walkā€

As most families in the 60s/70s we were also a 1 car outfit and had a 2nd hand 64 plate Volvo amazon , but my old man was out the door at 0630hrs so no chance of a lift.
