MEH DIY build

It’s a trick to neutralise distortion. The distortion arises because the cone moves differently when it’s closer to the magnet than when it’s further from the magnet. That’s the problem we’re trying to fix.

So we need to arrange for one cone to be closer to the magnet when the other cone is further away, and vice versa.

If you point the two dust caps at one another then they both move away from their magnets at the same time. And half a cycle later they both move towards their magnets. That’ll make just as much sound as Linkwitz’s arrangement, but it won’t cancel the distortion. Linkwitz’s arrangement does cancel the distortion.

If it’s any consolation it wasn’t clear to me to begin with either. But after some head scratching I realised that he is (was, bless him) right.

I am getting it cnc cut and will then just assemble myself.
Have you downloaded the new plans? They are more straight forward than the originals now.

Yes seen the v2 plans thanks.
Have you bought the CDs yet? Maybe we can get some discount if we do. A mini group buy?

Small update on this epically slow thread.

I have all the drivers, the crossovers for the compression drivers and a minidsp. The compression drivers are absolute beasts:

I have also got the initial flares 3D printed but just need to get around to picking them up, I went a bit mental and got them done with 90% infill . Will put photos up once I get them.

So I just need to get the connectors and wires and the wood cut. Then I can finally start assembly. I modelled out the handles as I have no need to move them around once they are done and it will make the cabinet a cleaner look.

I still haven’t decided on the sub side and will likely build these up then decide how much bass I really need.
Visually I like this look/style someone found the other day, although would still consider the MEHs on stands and a single sub somewhere else in the room.

Yeah, they do look pretty sweet. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

They do look lovely, but I’m not sure that works be my bass solution of choice. If the MEH go down to 80Hz, I’d go big - scoop, tapped horn or Lab sub!

I have lab subs available for loan or purchase.

You are getting into large footprint/ugly junk territory though…

What do Lab Subs go down to?

Hmmmm, 30 hz?

Fantastic news @dom

The Lab12 is pretty similar to the Don Snyder 12" I built.
Here is a plot with the Delfinimax 12" in it.

(Crossing it low pass at 60Hz here, it will play to around 100 fine.

I’m not sure what I’m doing with it going forward..
Forming an orderly queue behind Ritchie🙂
You are welcome to borrow / buy it😂 @dom

To get 20Hz you need another 22" or so height.

I think Andy is going to borrow/buy mine, Steve. :slightly_smiling_face:

I am probably going to go for something aesthetically better to be honest

Although these are supposed to pair well SKRAM 21inch:

I guess with the handles gone and a bit of paint on the inside would help these look bearable.

Specs

  • Dimensions: 609.6 × 812.8 × 914.4mm (24”x32”x36”)
  • Weight: 52kg (115 LBS), Unloaded, Baltic Birch
  • Vent Tuning: All vents open = 29.5Hz / 3 vents open = 25.5Hz / 2 vents open = 20.5Hz / 1 vent open = 14.5Hz

21" !! Wow. They’ll rattle the windows!

It’s the potential of down to 14.5Hz that got me excited  but it’s big so I might go for one in the corner of the room as the rooms not massive

Having heard @Rab1991 's Altec based horns, it really isn’t.

10–20% of the informational content, but a lumpy part of the physical/emotional effect…which stands for ‘0’ if the Mids are shit.

Each to their own.
Aim to have it all.. there’s often an octave missing

Even at 22hz cut off you’re missing a whole octave. 11hz or nothing.

But it really depends on how and what you listen to and where you live. Every system is a set of compromises and what one person can live without another can.

In my case I’m happy with down to roughly mid 30’s and I’m sure my neighbours are happy with that as well.
