I am also slowly getting there with designing the subs to go under them, this is the same width of the JMOD and will put them at a decent height for the listening position:
They look proper!
One excellent design feature of the Lab Subs that I have is that the drivers face to the side. This means there’s a panel to access them - and install them!
I have this on the other side
Which is big enough to get the driver in and out and fix it in place. I couldn’t get my head around a side facing driver, plus it would make a cabinet too narrow and tall for my needs
Why not go full Scott Hinson and build his sub design?
Dual 18" FTW!
Give Geoff a call. He’s very good. And reasonably local in Bexhill
I did think of half of one of these, but the depth made it a no no sadly.
I’ve just gone on a pleasant mental journey of building these in two halves (a full size one won’t make the turn into my basement), before coming to the obvious conclusion that it would be fucking stupid.
So? This is the 'toir, after all
I measured and even a half size would be a hassle to get downstairs. And no, I will not be cutting holes in my floors.
And when has that ever stopped you before???
Harsh but fair
So thinking something like this, teal is wifes choice, outside will be either waxed and slightly darkened birch ply, or if I really push the boat out I might get it veneered in oak
They look great.
I find that simple Danish oil works really well on birch ply, giving a strong and lasting finish. I’ll either do that or tung oil on mine - tung is darker and more matt, less sheen. That said, having oiled edges does look more DIY.
Maybe just add a grille cloth to the front of both?
I hadn’t thought about cloth, but yes also an option.
The only issue with the above solution is the depth required for the sub although it is only 18cm deeper than the JMOD.
Still considering a sub arrangement like this reflex/ported one. As it would be much simpler to build and will not take up as much room.
Or as they drop off at 70-80Hz, just put them on stands and have an off the shelf sub somewhere in the room. But this option doesn’t seem as much fun.
Prefer this colour over the teal.
Indeed!
Can you tell my wife that?
Too tall for my situation, unless I only listen standing up, but wouldn’t be hard to make that less tall and just deeper.
Slight downward tilt to the MEHs, Focal-style?
I think even with the ones I mocked up earlier I would have a downward tilt, so with those it would be a fair bit of tilt. If I can keep the frontal size similar to the Snell As they will fit nicely in the room and not be too obtrusive.
