I was regaled last night with tales of Christmas trips to the vets after dogs had eaten mince pies left out for Santa.
Luckily no self respecting meat man would leave a mince pie unsupervised like that.

So, very late in the day, but is this 2024’s worst home-made pie ?


This ^. Except freezer. I’ve no idea how long it might have been in there. At least this time last year. Raw, the stuff had a bad ‘feel’ to it and some sort of crust seemed to have formed. Anyway, waste not, want not. I kneaded it into a fairly homogeneous state. There was just enough to make four pies alongside eight of this year’s in my 12-pie tin. This year’s were fine. Of the ones made with the prehistoric pastry two welded themselves so resolutely into the tray that I had to dig them out in fragments using a teaspoon. I added ice-cream and ended up with some sort of awful 
 well 
 patĂ©-like substance. I ate it though.

The two that came out had oozed. The pastry was discoloured and flat and biscuity. I ate one of those last night. The pics show the remaining one. It took a serrated veg knife to saw it in half.

Anyone got anything badder ?

Fol2’s this year weren’t particularly photogenic, but they tasted great. Mincemeat has been maturing for 14 months. (The mincemeat was not cooked beforehand, like Paul @pmac 's, so you can see the white beef suet in the uncooked pies)

I’m doing one more batch of proper pies for New Year.
Didn’t photograph my first batch as I went rogue with the presentation. Did mini tarts with no topping. Wanted to recreate that chewy caramelized goodness that leaks out, but on a larger scale. They were OK; exposed surface turned chewy innards stayed moist, but they felt off.

As the year draws to a close I was hoping to thank everyone for making the pie thread such a blast this year - it’s been a laugh
 my wife just got home and made me close my eyes as she led me to the kitchen - surprise she said
