The fact is that governments can make changes and recent governments in this country have tended to let/make things get worse for the poor. But even ones who made public commitments to make them better (Tony Blair on child poverty, Gordon Brown on pensioner poverty) found it was anything but ā€˜a piece of piss’. In the case of children here’s what actually happened

(these figures are from the Child Poverty Action Group, not some dogma-driven right-wing think tank). To start with things went well. They picked off the low-hanging fruit and got the overall fraction of children in relative poverty down from 34% to about 29%. But then things started to flat-line. It turned out that improving things any further was hard. As it so often is.

I don’t suppose it’ll actually happen, but it’s the right noises…

Superb.

The Environment Agency would not have released this unless their Cabinet Minister and the Prime Minister were essentially dear ducks.

The best response the government machine could offer was some decrepit statement from a spokesperson at DEFRA.

Can’t see DEFRA bringing any prosecutions, looking after their rich mates is the Tory way.

Will played the environment agencyšŸ‘Œ

thats why I was so surprised to see the proposal - fines have always been the way because the customers pay them…

No CEO would ever be prosecuted.

They should be fined one months net profit for every serious incident.

Shareholders will soon get very upset as dividends disappear when Anglian, Southern and Thames have an entire years profit wiped out.

Before anyone else mentions it - the fact that the incidence of serious pollution in Anglia topped the table the year after I moved there is sheer coincidence.

Environment Agency striking while DEFRA is fucked.

CEOs should be jailed, along with a smattering of Directors. Also the Company ( shareholders) fined, think of it as punishment for employing shit CEOs.

The punishment needs to be unshakeable - anything that can be passed on to customers is useless

that’s what the companies and their Tory chums have always relied on, and with this Gov nothing is going to change

To be fair, it’s not a uniquely Tory approach. It’s an ā€˜I’m also on the board of another company, you scratch my back’ approach common to all those sorts of people. Same with the pathetic attempts to reign in exec remuneration

Made me laugh

It’s reported that Boris Johnson could make north of Ā£1m for his memoirs. Why not make a film ?, then I remembered Billy Liar had already been made back in 1963. Late to the party again Boris.
