BBC this AM: “Don’t you think it’s disrespectful to the millions who voted for it [to discuss the problems it’s caused / rejoining]?”.
…so what about the millions who voted remain? The millions who were lied to? The millions who have noticed how much harm it’s caused and have changed their minds? The millions so disenfranchised they didn’t bother voting and wish they had? The millions who weren’t old enough to vote eight years ago?
The catch is… and you may well disagree… we aren’t ready yet. The UK can’t do the equivalent of ‘lol jx’ and reset the clock to May 2016. Any argument to rejoin is under different terms to those we left and I’m not (yet) convinced that the comfortable majority exists to get that through. I think it will, just not yet.
I also think that right now is a less than perfect time to be making the argument. The EU parliament is going to be more right leaning than it has in a very long time for the next few years. I’m not smart enough to know exactly what the outcome of that will be but it will both shape the UK’s terms of re-entry and the trajectory of the EU itself.
I don’t disagree with a word of that, I disagree with news media who continue to defend what is a demonstrable disaster, and I disagree with political parties who lack the courage to even signal the need to re-examine our geopolitical positioning in the future. As with any idea, it needs a good long time to percolate through the dense bony matter insulating most of us from uncomfortable truths / clung-to prejudices…
Largely irrelevant what ‘Europe’ wants - they have to make an example of us to demonstrate the folly of leaving to others who might be sniffing the same lamp-post…
Starmer has held back on releasing his manifesto in fear of the tories stealing it or it being brutalised by the right wing press.
Don’t know why he bothered, it’s completely inoffensive, uninspiring and I can’t possibly see why anyone would switch a vote for a continuation of the same shite we have endured for the past 14 years. I fcking pray he just wants elected and will up his game in a year or so. Otherwise he can fck the fck off.
