The best thing I’ve done for the remnants of my mental health has been ceasing to read media opinion columns. If I coud stay the fuck out of political discussions I could concentrate 100% on drooling and rocking to-and-fro in a darkened room.
This. Paul - working in Labour’s fundraising team dealing with celebrities &c before being parachuted in as a candidate - has worked one-on-one with Starmer. Starmer’s rep for a strong work-ethic is apparently very real, and he has zero tolerance for slackers. Morally, all the evidence points the same way. He’s made a lot of excellent, rational appointments of people who actually have real world knowledge to the cabinet. Sam really rates Rachel Reeves as chancellor, for example, she’s the genuine article.
They have a mountain to climb, but the potential is there to make big changes, and give the gammon army stress-related thromboses. Win/win

An interesting thought experiment would be to swap the political and football pundits and see if anybody would notice. They would always tell us what they think should happen, then after the event, which turns out completely differently from their prognostications, tell us why they were right all along. Don’t let these people near your pools coupon.

Politics has long been reduced to Their Team vs. Our Team, with an expectation of blind support no matter the results. The real complexities behind the scenes have become invisible, and worse, most people think none of it has anything to do with them, leading to widespread disenfranchisement. This year’s low turnout is one result. Democratic it ain’t!

I agree with him. A genius, forward thinking move (imo) for Starmer to appoint him.
Not at all convinced the general populus would agree though.
Fortunately they probably won’t have a say for 5 years so there’s an opportunity to see if it works.
Sorting the court system out is another challenge.

Thanks for that - informative, and he’s exactly the kind of person we most need in government (and exactly the kind of person who (sadly) usually steers clear of political appointments)! The rightwing media are going to have their work cut-out undermining a successful businessman who already practices what he preaches!
