It’s a challenge. I mean, Labour comms is shit. But I’m also not a fan of celebrating net migration falling, because it just encourages all the absolute cunts that it’s still a good idea. It needs push back.
Certainly in a lot of areas they could really do with learning from Mamdani and his approach to communications (and his ability to get things done, actually). He seems a very rare beast in that regard - Dems in the USA seem to be similarly shit about messaging.
To be fair it was just headline news on The World At One and there was some level of thoughtful discussion which was trying to unpick the stats. Long story short - it’s complicated.
But the Labour (Red Wall) MP for Bassetlaw said that there “the people walking our streets have changed” and that that had, sadly, led to racism. Her constituents just assumed that all those people had arrived on small boats, not that many of them were actually here on health and social care visas doing really important work and often for not much money. Seeing your streets change ‘suddenly’ (a few years is suddenly in this context) is unsettling.
I don’t know Bassetlaw so I can’t say. Between Farage’s message and the very high profile press reporting of the small boats, perhaps I understand why the change that the local MP has noted was put down to small boats arrivals.
But it was the MP who mentioned the change. I’ve also noticed it here. We arrived in Didcot in 1989 after 10 years in much more multiethnic places - Oxford then Houston then Leamington. I was struck by how very few brown or black people there were here - literally just a few scientists from my lab and the handful of guys who ran the Nepalese and Tandoori restaurants. Over perhaps the last 10 years we’ve moved to being a much more diverse community. I’m pleased about this but I’d have had to have been blind not to have noticed.
Don’t know if this should be here or in the CP thread but I always thought TYK was a decent channel and unless I’m mistaken, didn’t consider Cenk Uygur to have extremist opinions???
He is now a 9/11 denier, apparently because a couple of passports were found intact.
Funny thing is, paper can be extremely good at surviving. From my experience in the waste industry (1) Yellow Pages were hated by incinerator operators as they can happily pass through an hour of incineration losing only a few of their outermost pages, and (2) when excavating landfill sites, they have found 50 year old newspapers that could be opened and read no problem.
Sometimes, weird things happen that you don’t expect.
Shameless behaviour from the Trump administration. How predictable. If there’s a gutter, these cunts will dive right in.
Vance:
The prime minister’s office responded after the senior Republican politician claimed in a post on X that Nowak would be alive “if the last few generations of European elites had stood their ground against the politics of self-hatred and the mass invasion of migrants, many of whom despise the West and the people who love it”.
US Department of State:
In a post on X, the department said: “Ideological conditioning and two-tiered policing are glaring symptoms of civilizational decline. They must be rejected across the West. The United States sends our condolences to the family of Henry Nowak and the people of the United Kingdom at this troubling time.”
I suppose Americans, better than most, understand the risk that an ‘invasion’ of migrants can lead to a genocide of the indigenous people in a country because that’s what happened in… Oh.
Which is an obsequious little toady who will jump every time Trump even thinks about it,
I am not sure we have seen his true colours at all and he may be (admittedly unlikely) a different person when out of Trump’s shadow.
But he also can’t afford to lose MAGA so may not stray far from the line.
Glasshouses and stones come to mind, the swamp has become deeper and murkier in the past year or so. America has become a carbuncle on the backside of humanity, transparency and honesty under this administration.
