Mumsnet time: mattresses

We went for a Hypnos mattress.
Fucking excellent except, due to the integral mattress topper, it can only be top and tailed but not flipped.

Degree-level philosophy question: if it’s integrated, is it really a topper?

You don’t have to flip with an integrated topper.

The best mattress I ever had was a Hypnos I swapped it for my present one. Mistake.

Yes, ish. I think. Kind of.

I’m aware but in my mind it shortens the life because there are less options for spreading the wear/weight.

I hvae never heard anything positive about that company.
Cheap end of the market, all ‘advice’ will be heavily commission influenced.

We have had a staples pillow top for 2 years now, can’t find many online, but got it from John Lewis. Good enough for the queen is good enough for me :+1:

I will sleep on anything.

….‘TIL she wakes up. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

May sound a daft question but what do you use it on?

We’re looking for another to replace what has been a very good Rely-On but I think we can continue to use the quite spendy (as I recall) divan beneath it, That also has some springing in it if memory serves.

we previously had an Ikea super king divan/mattress combo a bit like this:

the mattress springs had stated to collapse but the two divans were fine, so we got some new covers for the divans and a new mattress

Interesting to see that mattresses in different countries seem to have different preferences.

I personally prefer pocket spring mattresses, because of the ventilation characteristics.
It is quite common in NL, but wasn’t in Germany until recently.
I like the Dutch company Auping, they have bedframes of metal that have a good airflow too.
Chose another brand mattress though, as Auping could be expensive.

Another style is the bedding system by Hästens that some friends of us have chosen, but that is even more expensive.

Ikea is generally also a good recommendation as long as a lenght of 200 cm suits you, I needed 210 cm.

Example of Auping:

We bought a king sized memory bed / mattress off them about 15 years ago and have never had a problem.

@pbg Thanks, didn’t know Tempur have a poor rep for reliability, and yes they are pricey.

Thanks both, back to the drawing board.

Best night’s sleep I’ve had was in Denmark on a friend’s waterbed. We got a brief lesson re how cheap waterbeds are very wobbly & how better ones are much harder to provoke to movement. It was fantastically comfortable and very good on my back. They seem to have gone out of fashion somewhat & the idea of having half a ton of water ready to fill your room was less than appealing. But you’d have needed to be quite determined to have punctured that one. I still remember how nice an experience it was.

I would also be worried about loading on floor joists, especially in older properties.

I just had images of the ceiling in your flat in Plymouth and how a water bed may have added to the excitement!

Well that was confusing always thought that UK King size was 210cm long but it’s not.

Seems fairly random but Ikea do a 210cm long King size bed.

Just checked on the Dutch (long people  ) Ikea site, all beds are up to 200 cm.

weird, this is similar to the one I’ve got
