Need a new toaster

My well used DeLonghi toaster is on its last legs.

Recommendations please.

  • 4 slice facility essential
  • Must accommodate thick bread/crumpets & the like
  • Defrost mode
  • looks are unimportant - functionality ftw

Not looking to spend megabucks - <£100

TIA

Second hand dualit, all fully repairable even by a klutz like me, get the chrome one and looks great

Ours is 10yrs old and bought it secondhand, changed a couple of the heaters some years ago

Defrost mode = turn the dial less than normal

In the tradition of ignoring the OP completely:

Obvious answer is obvious: Dualit.

+1 for Dualit if you want functionality and reliability

We’re still using the one we bought in 1988 - and they are still made in the UK AFAIK

Repaired my 32 year old Dualit last week with new elements. Working perfectly and will now see me out.

Value is a funny concept isn’t it. ? Many will happily spend £1, 2, 3, 5K on a cartridge that will last, say, 1000 hours. When we move outside of hi-fi, however, the cheaper the better. I guess it’s all down to priorities.

Rowlett > Dualit

I just looked at what most cafe’s have used up and down the country for the last 80 years. These things are servicable, robust and have a classic design. They also toast evenly.

Sorry, my comment wasn’t aimed directly at you. It was supposed to have been a generic comment / observation.

Thank you for your totally irrelevant contribution

I want one of these.

I’m probably the opposite of that. I’m almost obsessive about buying quality stuff. Never really top end esoteric stuff but almost always above my intended budget. It’s ridiculous tbh.
Amateur chef, I need Wusthof even though the victorinox stuff I already had was great.
Competent DIYer. I need Milwaukee/wera/wiha even though Ryobi would most likely be more than sufficient.
Food shopping, M&S, Waitrose, local fancy butchers. Like Aldi and Lidl finest stuff but I hate the big supermarkets like Asda and Tesco.
Clothes, always Paul Smith/Boss level or above even for socks and boxers.
I’m not a spendthrift, I don’t buy stuff that often but when I do I have this thing in my head I can’t buy mediocre and always need to buy the best available even though its way beyond my use case. I have no explanation for this…

Dualit.

Unlike almost every other toaster in existence, can be serviced and maintained. Meaning it won’t end up in landfill. It’s a design icon, and is pretty bomb proof.

I’ve had mine for about 12 years now. Has never missed a beat.

There’s a reason it’s in professional kitchens across the country

I think you might need to buy an old one to get that level of performance. I did my usual research and bought a dualit about five years ago on their reputation. I need to flip the toast halfway to ensure an even toasting. It’s shit. My old John Lewis own brand one was far better till it started tripping the ring main.

This seems worth a punt, healthy discount and spare elements https://www.nisbets.co.uk/rowlett-esprit-4-slot-toaster-chrome-w2x-additional-elements--sandwich-cage/ch181
