Obituaries

To be fair, by the time of Stage Fright, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel were both hopeless alcoholics, and Levon Helm was a full blown heroin addict who slept until the afternoon so it was left to Robbie and Garth Hudson to do the heavy lifting. Amazing they lasted as long together as they did really, and a testament to their friendship and love for each other.

Some tremendous interviews particularly back in the 1970’s

The calibre of the guests on chat shows nowadays seems, for the most part, a few levels lower as are the questions asked.

Word has it that when he arrived at the Pearly Gates, he was given a free Parker Pen just for applying.

My favourite Parky story.
He said that he attended a dinner party and the seating was boy/girl/boy/girl and he was sitting next to an american actress. She said that she had enjoyed her stay in the UK but was quite perplexed by cricket and would love to know more.
Parky then spent half an hour going into the intracacies of the game
She listened attentatively and then said. “That is amazing! - and they do all that on horseback?”

As much for the late Sir Les as for Parky. Love this joke.

What a legend of TV, so many interviews with fantastic characters over the years. His interviews with Sir Les and Billy Connolly are top-class.

He was a bit surviving was Parky, fond memories of watching his interviews with the family back in the day.

Popped this in the tv thread a while back,

Must find the Parkinson interview with Bronowski, his telling of his families history and the concentration camps is compelling by all accounts. Parky rates it as the one interview he would save for posterity if that was a choice he had to make.

The interview… Worth a watch if you have the time.

It sad to hear about Michael Parkinson. He was a pupil at the school I first taught at. It seemed he wasn’t fond of school. But he loved his cricket.

Great interviews over the years. Top of his game.

Thanks we both really enjoyed that.

Bronowski was one of my childhood heroes, who along with David Attenborough inspired my future career in - and lifelong love for - all things involving ancient history and prehistory, faintly ironic for a mathematician.

This is one of my favourite Parky interviews - Kenneth Williams comes out on the attack of critics and blazes like he’s on speed for 10 mins, and then you get the lovely self deprecating John Betjeman allowed to get a word in edgeways before finishing off with Kenneth and Maggie giving John some love with a poetry reading.

Magical TV
