He helped Middlesbrough FC at one time

I couldn’t remember who managed England at Italia 90 so I googled it…

Geordie Walker.

That one hits hard.

A shitty winter Sunday night in Ravenscourt Park, 1986 I guess. Bored. Reading Sounds. Oh, Killing Joke are playing the Hammersmith Palais err, now.

10 minute walk up the road and Jaz, Geordie, Raven and Big Paul Ferguson put an indelible stamp on my brain.

Damn.

And for those not familiar with his oeuvre, some “not Killing Joke” bits might be interesting

Oh no!

I saw Killing Joke 3 times, I think. Just before their first album came out, just after and again on their second album tour. They were incredibly exciting live, they had an aura.

One of the things I remember most was the sound of Geordie’s guitar. He played LOUD! But also had total control over his sound. There were times where he would walk up to his amp with a chord ringing, fiddle with the knobs and get this absolutely monumental roar out of the thing, huge swirling, distortion and feedback. I think ‘Primitive’ and the middle 8 of ‘Change’ were where he did this but there could have been other bits too. His chugging style was rhythmically bang-on, it got inside you, and with his guitar slung low, he had heaps of nonchalant cool. What a hero.

Just reading a bit more detail about this. He had a stroke on Friday and died last night.

Oh Fuck. Not unexpected but still very sad.
Seeing the Pogues at the Town and Country in the 80s is still a stand out gig in my memory
