Maggie Smith, one of the great actors, guaranteed to raise a wry smile. Always enjoyed her roles, should have been given an honorary membership of AA, didn’t suffer fools or hanger ons. R I P.

I see Clive Everton has passed away. The BBC’s decision to largely replace him in the snooker commentary booth with Stephen Hendry, Ken Doherty et al. was a huge mistake.

Missed this one: Bruno Sacco. Head of Mercedes Benz design from 1975 to 1999 and instrumental in the design of the W124 E-class (and others).

Passed on September 19th, age 90.
