56 actually, ironically the same his trucks are limited to.

Had he been 65 in 2011 then ES snr, who would have been 82 then, would have become a dad at 17. Not impossible, of course, but social services might have got involved.

Were those kinds of social services even in place in 1945? The newspaper article does suggest Eddie Jr was born in '45 and Eddie Sr in 1928 so he would have been 17.

Actually in 1945 it might not have been legally iffy. Maybe all that would have mattered would have been ā€˜Mrsā€™ Stobartā€™s age.

In the mid-70ā€™s one of my classmates didnā€™t turn up to school one day (maybe he was 15 ?) and the next thing we knew he was in North Sea Camp, which was the local borstal then, for something similar.

On my grandparents marriage cert from 1929 my Grandfatherā€™s age is recorded as 17.
My Grandmother was 21

My Dad was born 5 months later!

So thatā€™s fine then, and your grandfather did the honourable thing.

My schoolmateā€™s g/f was no older than he was.

I think it was a bit more than honouring a fling, they went on to have 6 kids! :grinning:

I donā€™t know why but just knowing who this is ages me. I imagine it was somewhat of a downhill path after his early careerā€¦

Sorry to hear this. He was a good man, and didnā€™t mind keeping interesting company

Heaven knows what Thompson would have made of Trump. I hope Carterā€™s people keep Trump a million miles from the funeral.

He was also one of the USN personel working for Rickover who was sent to help the Canadians deal with their reactor accident. He spent 90 seconds in the reactor housing and had to rotate a screw one turn. This experience helped form his views on nuclear weapons; he scrapped the Neutron bomb development and continued with the START treaty.

The term ā€œcrudā€, used to describe ā€œdebrisā€ inside a reactor primary circuit was derived from this incident, Chalk River Unidentified Deposits.

Also learnt his foundation funded the nigh on eradication of Guinea Worm infestations.
