Obituaries

Don’t know if this is mentioned in the video, but Terry Cox also played on Space Oddity.

Never heard a note they played, but those homoerotic album covers were worth the price of admission alone

Sad news.

Indeed. My brother knew him in the late 90’s but he was seriously fucked up by covering & witnessing the Rwanda genocide which rather trivialised his relationships with people back here & was very tough for his then wife.

Huge amount of time for him, always very easy to listen to and just came across as a really nice and knowledgeable bloke I could happily have on the radio.

Knew he went through a rough spell but didn’t realise it was to do with Rwanda.

Do you know why he was there?

He used to travel a lot, seeking out world music & I guess he was in the vicinity & went into proper BBC journalist mode. But witnessed some awful stuff.

Bit more official than that, he was branching out from DJ work and did work for the BBC on Radio 4’s From Our Own Correspondent, Today and The World Tonight.

Andy Kershaw was in Rwanda in 1994 to report on the genocide for the BBC. He and his producers snuck over the border from Burundi to witness and document the unfolding atrocity, which he felt was not being adequately covered by other media outlet

Nedra Yvonne Talley, later known as Nedra Talley Ross, 80.

Cousin of Ronnie and Estelle Bennett, together they formed The Ronettes.

Their ‘break’ was a pure accident - they were all underage when they tried to sneak into the Peppermint Lounge in New York, posing as ‘Ronnie and the Relatives’. The manager mistook them for a professional dancing trio scheduled to dance behind the house band and they were pushed onto the stage. Ronnie grabbed the microphone and started singing, landing them a permanent spot.

Was going through a bunch of old records in my garage at the weekend. I can’t recall where they came from & I think/thought I’d already picked out all the interesting items.

Anyhow, in amongst them were a few 7" singles including Baby I love you by the Ronettes. What was interesting about that one was the ‘B’ side by the Phil Spector group which is a startling piece of jazz called Miss Joan & Mr. Sam. I know Phil Spector ended up marrying Ronnie Bennett (for 4 years before she fled) but presumably, at that stage, the Ronettes didn’t have a B side to use. Was this a vanity release by Phil? Who knows. Anyway, very good.

Also in this little group of singles was Nina Simone recorded live doing I’ve got life.

Also a Dusty Springfield single and another from a French singer called Georges Brassens which I really like.

Will have to clean them up & bring to Lopwell for the singles session.

Deeply saddened by this. His resilience under extremis was extraordinary.
