I get that, I suppose that I meant that the Ireland I experienced in the 70s (rural Kerry) was vastly different to what was happening in the North
Now that is John Prine country . We spent summers in a village called Brandon over the Connor Pass from Dingle. Religion, smoking enormous numbers of fags and Guinness were very popular too.
Such sad news, i enjoyed the time I spent with Clive, a lovely guy. RIP.
I was only just in Kerry, just over the Healy Pass (Adrigole to Lauragh Road)
Lovely. Have you heard “On the Road to Tralee” by Julian Cope on his Drunken Songs LP? That is just the kind of road the bus in the song struggles along at 20mph with a 5 mile tailback behind it.
My Mum grew up at Glanmore Lake (the road in the pic is the Kerry side of the Healy Pass) Kenmare river in the distance
Lucky for you.
Not so lucky for the people that lived there, it was very poor part of the Country, my Mum used to say ‘you can’t eat views’ It was very poor land, no good for agriculture, My Mum, two of her sisters and her brother were all economic migrants to England in the 50s.
We used to stay with my Aunt in the summer, In the late 70s there was still no electricity in the house
During the end of my drinking days I would play the album Irish Heartbeat with The Chieftains and Van Morrison singing Carrigfergus. Brilliant.
I do believe I saw him perform in South Carolina many years ago - I had never heard of hilm till then.
If I had to recommend one John Prine song it would be “Hello In There”.
Not music-related, but his columns were always gentle explanations of technology. RIP.
