Many were also flooded 18 months ago, can’t see the insurance companies being interested.
The news were saying it was mainly the drains backing up as the flood defences had contained the river levels

I think that the government last year (?) mandated that insurance companies cannot refuse cover just because flood risk is high. Ultimately that’s what insurance is for. I don’t mind an extra quid on my policy so that people in such high risk areas can also be covered.
I’m sure they were interviewing people who said they couldn’t get insured after they were flooded previously (or maybe it was stupidly expensive)
Of course, this will certainly mean planning permission on flooded areas will be withheld… 🤦
The scheme’s called Flood Re. There are those who say that it takes money from people who chose to buy houses which don’t flood and gives it to people who bought ones which do, and that this also lowers the incentive both to homeowners and to government to actually set about mitigating the flood risk. And for sure that would cover NOT building on flood plains (as they seem to be doing here). Like all properly complex arguments there are two sides to it of course, both with good points to make.
I once heard an insurance rep say that insurance is for covering against risk, not against certainty.

I dunno, if I lived in a flood risk areas i don’t think that I would see the financial compensation as sufficient to cover the loss of having most of the stuff in my home destroyed.
Me neither. As far as homeowners go I don’t think it’s a very convincing argument. But people do make it, particularly in respect of government, to be fair.
When we bought the place we’re now in we had the choice of houses down on the Thames valley floor or houses 20-odd metres higher up. I don’t remember it actually being a factor at the time we made the decision. But soon afterwards I became quite well acquainted with the local building inspector and given what he said I was suddenly very grateful we were up here rather than down there.

This.
Also, it’ll probably be months until those homes are livable again. What to do/where to go in the interim? Not a good time to be homeless.
cameras look that way
WTF? I never remember to carry tools like that to Tescos.
I think I would be having a word…
That does look like a particularly cuntish piece of street furniture though. Not seen anything like it before.
Bell end meets a bell end.
NFN=normal for Norwood
They’re common round here. This is the junction of Sidney St and Magdalen Rd in east Oxford. They stop white van man taking the trees out
