Mate, honestly. That level of ambition is more nature than nurture. I guess because of the black and white nature of the way young people think, it has at times been very uncomfortable witnessing her go through it.
Also, it hasn’t been easy for her to fit in at the school, surrounded by heiresses that have, for the most part, a completely different outlook to her. She has though developed a “fuck 'em” attitude, which I find quite exciting.
Future interview with Laura K’s sprog on a sofa:
“When we grew up my Dad couldn’t afford a tonearm that was the right length or one with a curve in it.”
Well… at the moment political journalism is what she has her eye on, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if she ended up a politician. We used to wince at the idea, I mean, I can’t imagine a dirtier, more cutthroat vocation. But recently, I can see a steelyness emerging, I find it much harder to get anywhere arguing with her!
She is absolutely obsessed with politics, for sure, and is very knowledgeable about current affairs world wide, not just here. Seriously, she’s insatiable. I can go up to her room when she is home, and she’ll have a book open about French post- war politics, be watching CNN, and having some online political debate simultaneously. Not kidding!
Oh yes, much to my annoyance my niece and nephew were shipped off to board at Repton, both were subjected to a toxic mix of snobbery and bullying. One found a way to cope and made it through, the other didn’t.
It takes a lot of character to stand your ground and be yourself in those situations.
Well, we have none of the ‘you aren’t going out dressed like that’ sort of arguments, more politics, and attitude/mindset type stuff.
We had quite an intense discussion on the best version of Powderfinger last time she was home. She’s a fucking Crazy Horse denier! Her favourite version is on some obscure solo acoustic show from about 10 years ago. Fuck that!
I’ve had a marginally frustrating day from hell, but this has been totally changed by the news of the arrival of delightful grandniece!
Welcome Heidi Watson!
