Oof !
A real shame about The Wam. I remember the warm welcome at my first Bake Off at Graham and Hillary’s place in Kent.
I was a nervous newbie with a box of records. It was the first time I listened to music through Valves and I had never seen so much kit in one room! That Bake Off was the inspiration for my Music Evenings.
That Bake Off also inspired me to start upgrading various bits and pieces and The Wam was very helpful in this area.
It ultimately led me here though as after a pause between 2013 and 2018, I noticed that there were some changes!
AA feels like home now!
Yes, Graham and Hillary held some great bakes. Graham was a lovely bloke, may he rest in peace. Did you ever meet Dean Whizzkid?
I never met Whizzkid, but bought some of his CD recommendations.
It was a high risk strategy on my part but it did pay off.
Just.
That’s where I started in 2003 - “I’ll join a hifi forum and see what hifi is cheap and good!” I stupidly imagined.
I really don’t want to consider how many £thousands I’ve since spaffed up the wall…
My first bakeoff was an HFC one - Bristol suburbs, Chris summat, but can’t remember the lad’s username, but I do remember that sketchy old bloke ‘Effem’ from Cornwall being there trying to sell deadly kettle-leads made from coaxial interconnect cable
IIRC, the ‘Wam was James’ response to HFC’s threat to shut-down their forum because too many people were criticising their reviews and calling their writers crooks. Can’t entirely say I blame them for going-through with it, but they did us all a favour.
Peak 'Wam was probably the funniest thing I have ever witnessed. Unceasing arrivals of herds of bleating, soaking-wet, newborn noobs, boiling with self-importance and meltier than a Saharan snowflake…
Good times. I love a spot of navel gazing me…
Technobear?
Was there too. Chris the postie, he moved south and we lost touch. Really nice chap.
Was that when Effem started dowsing to check what kit would sound best? Proper bonkers.
Technobear lived in Glastonbury.
Who was the guy with the stormtrooper avatar that seemed to be on a mission to own every speaker available ?
Oh and I seem to remember the joke thread was actually quite funny.
I stumbled on it after moving back down to Devon and a complete stranger on the internet offered to lend me a valve amp to try with speakers. Happened to be Stu and lived in the next village. The generosity of many on there and here are what made it stand out for me.
Christ no - not that twat - he’s the pillock that showed-up at mine for the bakeoff that Rob @hoopsontoast mentioned above FOUR FUCKING HOURS EARLY and immediately put his own music on and turned my hifi up so high that the amp went into protection mode!
Wonder if he’s the same cunt that killed John’s @mibby DAC?
My memory is that Zerogain kicked off when HFC died, the Wam started up as Zerogain was in its death throes.
I am most likely confused tho.
Yes, well remembered - he was a smashing lad - and yes, that’s right about Frank too: believed in all that hippy dippy crystal bullshit too…
How so?
Yep. Frank brought Pasties and you bought a power cable.
